From deterministic cellular automata to coupled map lattices

A general mathematical method is presented for the systematic construction of coupled map lattices (CMLs) out of deterministic cellular automata (CAs). The entire CA rule space is addressed by means of a universal map for CAs that we have recently derived and that is not dependent on any freely adjustable parameters. The CMLs thus constructed are termed real-valued deterministic cellular automata (RDCA) and encompass all deterministic CAs in rule space in the asymptotic limit $\kappa \to 0$ of a continuous parameter $\kappa$. Stepping up to strike: a union mobilization case study of Polish migrant workers in the Netherlands

This article examines a union mobilization of Polish temporary agency workers in the Netherlands. The case study contributes to the migrant organizing literature a micro-level account of the dynamics of mobilization from the viewpoint of the migrants and organizers involved. The findings emphasize the importance of key actors in building solidarities within and between different groups of workers in fragmented workplaces, with implications for unions seeking new ways to respond to changing employment practices. This study highlights some of the possibilities and limitations of organizing among contractually fragmented workforces.

Nonlinear embeddings: Applications to analysis, fractals and polynomial root finding

We introduce $\mathcal{B}_{\kappa}$-embeddings, nonlinear mathematical structures that connect, through smooth paths parameterized by $\kappa$, a finite or denumerable set of objects at $\kappa=0$ (e.g. numbers, functions, vectors, coefficients of a generating function...) to their ordinary sum at $\kappa \to \infty$. We show that $\mathcal{B}_{\kappa}$-embeddings can be used to design nonlinear irreversible processes through this connection. A number of examples of increasing complexity are worked out to illustrate the possibilities uncovered by this concept. We introduce and discuss different approaches to construct order parameters for Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Maps. As one approach the notion of an order parameter in the sense of Haken’s synergetics is studied and contrasted with organization measures using SOM structure information.

This article analyses a project by Finnish and Estonian unions to adopt ‘organizing model’ strategies through establishing the transnational ‘Baltic Organising Academy’. Initially aimed at Estonian workplaces, successful campaigns inspired Finnish unions to copy the model in Finland. This cooperation was originally motivated by labour market interdependence between the two countries, and the failure of past social-partnership oriented union strategies in Estonia. In modern networks, HTTP clients communicate with web servers using request messages. By manipulating these messages attackers can collect confidential information from servers or even corrupt them. In this study, the approach based on anomaly detection is considered to find such attacks. For HTTP queries, feature matrices are obtained by applying an n-gram model, and, by learning on the basis of these matrices, growing hierarchical self-organizing maps are constructed. Simulating music with associative self-organizing maps

Abstract We present an architecture able to recognise pitches and to internally simulate likely continuations of partially heard melodies. Our architecture consists of a novel version of the Associative Self-Organizing Map (A-SOM) with generalized ancillary connections. We tested the performance of our architecture with melodies from a publicly available database containing 370 Bach chorale melodies. The results showed that the architecture could learn to represent and perfectly simulate the remaining 20% of three different interrupted melodies when using a context length of 8 centres of activity in the A-SOM.
