The contribution of tear osmolarity measurement to ocular surface assessment in contact lens wearers

2012

Purpose: To determine whether tear osmolarity using the TearLabTM Osmolarity System contributes to the assessment of the ocular surface in contact lens (CL) wearers. Methods: Data were collected from 44 CL wearers (28 tolerant and 16 intolerant) and 34 healthy subjects. Every patient underwent a thorough ophthalmic examination and tear osmolarity test, conjunctival impression cytology and meibomian lipid sampling. Symptoms, break-up time (BUT), tear osmolarity, conjunctival expression of HLA-DR and meibomian fatty acid composition were evaluated. Results: Tear osmolarity was significantly higher in the controls compared to tolerant and intolerant CL wearers (p=0.0007). Flow cytometry results …

Macular sensitivity and structure in idiopathic epiretinal membranes 12 months after surgical treatment

2013

Purpose: To evaluate macular sensitivity (MS) change and its correlation with visual acuity (VA) and Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) in patients with idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) at 3, 6 and 12 months after surgical treatment. Methods: Prospective, monocenter, interventional case series. We included 49 patients (49 eyes) with an idiopathic ERM scheduled for a surgical treatment. Among these patients, 40 were evaluated at 3 and 6 months (M3, M6), and 31 at 12 months (M12) after ERM and internal limiting membrane removal. At each visit a measurement of best-corrected visual acuity (ETDRS), a microperimetry and a SD-OCT were performed for all patients. Results: The …

Uncertainty quantification on a spatial Markov-chain model for the progression of skin cancer

2019

AbstractA spatial Markov-chain model is formulated for the progression of skin cancer. The model is based on the division of the computational domain into nodal points, that can be in a binary state: either in ‘cancer state’ or in ‘non-cancer state’. The model assigns probabilities for the non-reversible transition from ‘non-cancer’ state to the ‘cancer state’ that depend on the states of the neighbouring nodes. The likelihood of transition further depends on the life burden intensity of the UV-rays that the skin is exposed to. The probabilistic nature of the process and the uncertainty in the input data is assessed by the use of Monte Carlo simulations. A good fit between experiments on mi…

Auditory-evoked potentials to changes in sound duration in urethane-anesthetized mice

2019

Spectrotemporally complex sounds carry important information for acoustic communication. Among the important features of these sounds is the temporal duration. An event‐related potential called mismatch negativity indexes auditory change detection in humans. An analogous response (mismatch response) has been found to duration changes in speech sounds in rats but not yet in mice. We addressed whether mice show this response, and, if elicited, whether this response is functionally analogous to mismatch negativity or whether adaptation‐based models suffice to explain them. Auditory‐evoked potentials were epidurally recorded above the mice auditory cortex. The differential response to the chang…

Effects of fatiguing jumping exercise on mRNA expression of titin-complex proteins and calpains.

2009

Eccentric exercise induced by electrostimulation increases mRNA expression of titin-complex proteins in rodent skeletal muscle. In this study, mRNA expression of titin, muscle LIM protein (MLP), cardiac ankyrin repeat protein (CARP), ankyrin repeat domain protein 2 (Ankrd2), diabetes-related ankyrin repeat protein (DARP), and calcium-activated proteinases, calpains, were investigated in human skeletal muscle after fatiguing jumping exercise. Fatiguing jumping exercise did not change mRNA expression of titin, DARP, calpain 1, or calpain 3. MLP, Ankrd2 and calpain 2 mRNA levels were increased 2 days postexercise. CARP mRNA level was already elevated 30 min and remained elevated 2 days postexe…

Impact of t-PA administration on brain BDNF levels in physiological conditions and in circulating BDNF levels in ischemic conditions : Human and anim…

2014

Our objective was to test the hypothesis that the beneficial effect of the administration of the recombinant form of tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA) in ischemic stroke patient not only results from its fibrinolytic activity but also from its ability to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the brain. To this end, we conducted an initial study to evaluate the effect of rt-PA on brain BDNF levels in healthy animals. In a second study, we investigated the effect of rt-PA on serum BDNF levels in ischemic stroke patients and in animals subjected to permanent focal cerebral ischemia. Blood samples were obtained from patient on admission (D0), D1, D7 and D90 after stroke and in…

Dzieje organów w kościele parafialnym w Niemczy

2018

Pierwsze wzmianki o organach w kościele parafialnym w Niemczy pochodzą z przełomu XVI i XVII wieku. W latach 1597–1598 niewielki instrument wybudował Abraham Grasse. W 1617 roku ten sam organmistrz postawił nowe organy, liczące sześć głosów w manuale i trzy w pedale. Strawił je pożar w 1633 roku. W 1648 roku do odbudowanego kościoła zakupiono używany pozytyw. W 1725 roku świątynia wzbogaciła się o 20-głosowe organy wybudowane przez Ignatzego Mentzla. Służyły one parafii do 1852 roku, wówczas zamknięto, a następnie rozebrano kościół. Organy znajdujące się w obecnej świątyni pochodzą z 1866 roku i są dziełem Gottfrieda Riemera z Brzegu. Miały pierwotnie 18 głosów i mechaniczną trakturę rejest…

Elektrophysiologische Untersuchung zum Einsatz von Streptolysin O und Natrium-Hyaluronat zur Permeabilitätsmodulation der Membran des runden Fensters…

2003

Background: The round window membrane (RWM) acts like a barrier for topically applied substances into the middle ear preventing diffusion into the perilymphatic fluid compartment. Material and Method: In an animal model, modulation of the permeability of the RWM was attempted using Streptolysin-O (SLO) in various concentrations and sodium hyaluronate. Thereafter, the effect of intratympanically applied Lidocain 2% on hearing threshold measured by auditory brainstem response was tested for Lidocain 2 % and Lidocain 2 % in combination with SLO or sodium hyaluronate. Results: The results show that both, SLO and sodium hyaluronate, influence the effect of Lidocain 2 % on hearing thresholds as a…
