Effectiveness of Physical Therapy in Patients with Tension-type Headache: Literature Review

2014

Background: Tension-type headache (TTH) is a disease with a great incidence on quality of life and with a significant socioeconomic impact. Objectives: The aim of this review is to determine the effectiveness of physical therapy by using manual therapy (MT) for the relief of TTH. Data sources: A review was done identifying randomized controlled trials through searches in MEDLINE, PEDro, Cochrane and CINAHL (January 2002 – April 2012). Study selection: English-language studies, with adult patients and number of subjects not under 11, diagnosed with episodic tension-type headache (ETTH) and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) were included. Data extraction: Initial search was undertaken with…

Orofacial muscles activity in children with swallowing dysfunction and removable functional appliances

2019

Swallowing dysfunction is a frequent disorder among children and refers to an altered tongue posture and abnormal tongue movement during swallowing. Removable functional appliance is one of the treatments applied by dentistry to correct this disorder. The aim of this study was to evaluate any differences on orofacial muscles activity in children with swallowing dysfunction with and without removable functional appliances. 68 children were eligible for the study and divided into the orthodontic group (OG) and the no-orthodontic group (NO-OG). Both groups performed a dental occlusion-class evaluation, a swallowing function test and a myoscan analysis in order to measure perioral forces (i.e. …

Fusion of the

2015

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, COPD, affects the condition of the entire human organism and causes multiple comorbidities. Pathological lung changes lead to quantitative changes in the composition of the metabolites in different body fluids. The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, OSAS, occurs in conjunction with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in about 10–20 % of individuals who have COPD. Both conditions share the same comorbidities and this makes differentiating them difficult. The aim of this study was to investigate whether it is possible to diagnose a patient with either COPD or the OSA syndrome using a set of selected metabolites and to determine whether the metabolites t…

Association of uric acid with kidney function and albuminuria: the Uric Acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project

2021

Abstract Background Hyperuricemia is commonly observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, a better understanding of the relationship among uric acid (UA) values, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and albuminuria may shed light on the mechanisms underlying the excess of cardiovascular mortality associated with both chronic kidney disease and hyperuricemia and lead to better risk stratification. Our main goal was to study the relationships between serum uric acid and kidney disease measures (namely estimated GFR [eGFR] and albuminuria) in a large cohort of individuals at cardiovascular risk from the URic acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project database. Methods Clinica…

Profilin 1 negatively regulates osteoclast migration in postnatal skeletal growth, remodeling, and homeostasis in mice

2019

ABSTRACT Profilin 1 (Pfn1), a regulator of actin polymerization, controls cell movement in a context‐dependent manner. Pfn1 supports the locomotion of most adherent cells by assisting actin‐filament elongation, as has been shown in skeletal progenitor cells in our previous study. However, because Pfn1 has also been known to inhibit migration of certain cells, including T cells, by suppressing branched‐end elongation of actin filaments, we hypothesized that its roles in osteoclasts may be different from that of osteoblasts. By investigating the osteoclasts in culture, we first verified that Pfn1‐knockdown (KD) enhances bone resorption in preosteoclastic RAW264.7 cells, despite having a compa…

Validation of short term recall of mobile phone use for the Interphone study

2006

Aim: To validate short term recall of mobile phone use within Interphone, an international collaborative case control study of tumours of the brain, acoustic nerve, and salivary glands related to mobile telephone use. Methods: Mobile phone use of 672 volunteers in 11 countries was recorded by operators or through the use of software modified phones, and compared to use recalled six months later using the Interphone study questionnaire. Agreement between recalled and actual phone use was analysed using both categorical and continuous measures of number and duration of phone calls. Results: Correlations between recalled and actual phone use were moderate to high (ranging from 0.5 to 0.8 acros…

The role of pumpkin pulp extract carotenoids against mycotoxin damage in the blood brain barrier

2021

Some mycotoxins such as beauvericin (BEA), ochratoxin A (OTA), and zearalenone (ZEA) can cross the blood brain barrier, which is why we tested the anti-inflammatory action of a pumpkin carotenoid extract (from the pulp) against these mycotoxins and their combinations (OTA+ZEA and OTA+ZEA+BEA) on a blood brain barrier model with co-cultured ECV304 and C6 cells using an untargeted metabolomic approach. The cells were added with mycotoxins at a concentration of 100 nmol/L per mycotoxin and pumpkin carotenoid extract at 500 nmol/L. For control we used only vehicle solvent (cell control) or vehicle solvent with pumpkin extract (extract control). After two hours of exposure, samples were analysed…

Tissue factor and its procoagulant activity on cancer‐associated thromboembolism in pancreatic cancer

2021

Abstract Pancreatic cancer frequently involves cancer‐associated thromboembolism, which is strongly associated with poor prognosis. Tissue factor, a blood coagulation factor largely produced in cancer patients as a component of extracellular vesicles, plays a key role in the incidence of cancer‐associated thromboembolism in patients with pancreatic cancer. However, no prospective studies have been published on the relationship between tissue factor and cancer‐associated thromboembolism or patient clinical characteristics, including recent chemotherapy regimens. Thus, we aimed to address this in a Japanese cohort of 197 patients and 41 healthy volunteers. Plasma tissue factor levels were mea…

Impact of granulocyte colony‐stimulating factor on FOLFIRINOX‐induced neutropenia prevention: A population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic approach

2020

Aims Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is frequently prescribed to prevent chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, but the administration schedule remains empirical in case of bimonthly chemotherapy such as FOLFIRINOX regimen. This pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) study was performed to determine the effect of different G-CSF regimens on the incidence and duration of neutropenia following FOLFIRINOX administration in order to propose an optimal G-CSF dosing schedule. Methods A population PK/PD model was developed to describe individual neutrophil time course from absolute neutrophil counts (ANC) obtained in 40 advanced cancer patients receiving FOLFIRINOX regimen. The structura…
