Position-dependent reproductive success of flowers in Dactylorhiza maculata (Orchidaceae)

1. This study explores the importance of flower position for reproductive success of individual flowers of the deceptive terrestrial orchid, Dactylorhiza maculata (L.) Soo. 2. Upper flowers had smaller lips and produced lighter pollinia than those in other parts of the inflorescence, probably due to architectural effects. 3. Dry weight of seed capsules decreased from bottom to top in the inflorescence in both open-pollinated and hand-pollinated plants. However, removal of flowers from the middle and lowest parts of the inflorescence considerably increased seed production of the upper flowers. In Italy peat and perlite are commonly used as growth substrates in ornamental plant nurseries. Requests for ecologically sustainable growth substrates have recently focused research on the study of new media. In this context, biochar and compost, by-products of other production chains, may play a relevant role. The genetic diversity of Phytophthora spp. was investigated in potted ornamental and fruit tree species. A metabarcoding approach was used, based on a semi-nested PCR with Phytophthora genus-specific primers targeting the ITS1 region of the rDNA. More than 50 ITS1 sequence types representing at least 15 distinct Phytophthora taxa were detected.
