Effect of psychological stress on orthodontic tooth movement in rats

2010

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of psychological stress on orthodontic tooth movement in Wistar rats. Materials and methods: Forty-eight female ten-week old Wistar rats with an average weight of 188 ±12 gr were selected and randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. The experimental group received crowded environment-induced and cat odour stresses 4 weeks before spring insertion. On the 29th day in both groups, maxillary incisors were moved by the insertion of springs and exactly after 7 days, 9 rats from each group and after 14 days the remaining rats were sacrificed. Then the mesioincisal distance between maxillary incisors was measure…

The Relationship Between Tooth Size Discrepancy and Archform Classification in Orthodontic Patients

2015

Background: To determine the relationship between clinically significant tooth size discrepancies (TSD) and archform classification in orthodontic patients. Material and Methods: Two hundred and forty consecutive sets of pre-treatment orthodontic study models were scanned and landmarked. All models had permanent teeth erupted from first molar to first molar in both arches. Sixty sets of images were classified into two groups of 30 according to the presence (group 1) or absence (group 2) of a clinically significant overall or anterior TSD (>2 SD from Bolton’s original means). Mean upper and lower archforms were created for each group using a fourth degree polynomial curve. Upper and lower ar…

The perception of tooth whitening practices during and after orthodontic treatment: A survey of orthodontists

2020

Background At present, there are limited studies on how tooth whitening procedures are applied in orthodontic patients. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the perception of tooth whitening practices during and after orthodontic treatment. Material and methods A survey of orthodontists in Medellin (Colombia) between January and October 2020 was carried out. The survey instrument was developed to obtain information regarding the perception and practices of tooth whitening during and after orthodontic treatment. Results 133 orthodontists with a mean age of 41,6 years old participated in the survey. Over 60% of participants reported >6 years of experience as orthodontist. The …

A randomized clinical trial to evaluate the plaque removal efficacy of an oscillating-rotating toothbrush versus a sonic toothbrush in orthodontic pa…

2018

ABSTRACT Objective: To compare the plaque removal efficacy of an oscillating-rotating electric toothbrush with an orthodontic brush head versus a sonic toothbrush in adolescent patients with fixed orthodontic appliances. Materials and Methods: This was a randomized, examiner-blind, replicate single-use, two-treatment, four-period, crossover study with a washout period between visits of approximately 24 hours. Forty-four adolescent patients with fixed orthodontic appliances in both arches were randomized based on a computer-generated randomization schedule to one of four toothbrush treatment sequences. The primary outcome was plaque score change from baseline, measured using digital plaque i…

Quantitative structural analysis of trabecular alveolar bone in the mandible by multidetector computed tomography: Differences according to tooth pre…

2019

Background and objective: There is a lack of quantitative measures of the quality of alveolar trabecular bone, an important factor in implantology. This study aimed to develop a method of objectively assessing the quality of trabecular bone by means of image processing and structural analysis of multidetector computed tomography images and to establish differences between tooth types and tooth presence/absence. Materials and methods: We analyzed 20 patients who underwent multidetector computed tomography to evaluate mandibular bone and tooth positioning. Image analysis included automatic segmentation of the mandible, obtainment of sections perpendicular to the dental arch, and structural an…

Umanizzazione delle cure in odontostomatologia. Una tendenza emergente

2021

Shear bond strength of metal brackets to ceramic surfaces using a universal bonding resin.

2017

BACKGROUND: Assure Plus is a recently introduced universal adhesive with the ability to bond to various restorations. This study compared the shear bond strength of brackets bonded to two types of ceramics using conventional bonding agent and Assure Plus. Surface damage caused by debonding was also evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this in vitro study, 40 feldspathic and lithium disilicate ceramic discs were sandblasted, etched with 9.6% hydrofluoric acid and divided into two groups. In group 1, silane was applied and air-dried followed by application of Transbond XT primer, which was light-cured. In group 2, Assure Plus was applied and air-dried. In both groups, maxillary central incisor…

Microleakage and shear bond strength of orthodontc brackets bonded to hypomineralized enamel following different surface preparations

2014

Objectives: This study investigated the effects of several conditioning methods on shear bond strength (SBS) and microleakage of orthodontic brackets bonded to demineralized enamel. Study Design: One hundred premolars were selected and immersed in a cariogenic solution for 12 weeks. The teeth were randomly assigned into 5 groups. In groups 1 and 2, the teeth underwent acid etching for 30 and 120 seconds, respectively. In group 3, a combination of laser and acid etching was employed. A self-etch primer (SEP) was applied in group 4 and in group 5, the teeth were exposed to acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) for 4 minutes before etching. After bracket bonding, the teeth were immersed in methy…

Analysis of the unpredictable migration of impacted mandibular third molars: A pilot study

2020

Background Eruption of an impacted mandibular third molar (3MM) is often unpredictable. The objective of this study was to establish the radiographic parameters of migration in patients whose 3MMs evolved unpredictably. Material and Methods This was a retrospective observational study. Patients with unusual 3MM migration (away from their physiological eruption position with changes in the longitudinal and horizontal axes) and with at least two panoramic radiographs were included. To evaluate the radiographic parameters, images were superimposed, using mandibular angle and ipsilateral condyle as references. Results Of a total of 2851 patients, four were included in our study. The average age…

Shoulder muscle activation during stable and suspended push-ups at different heights in healthy subjects.

2015

Abstract Objectives To analyze shoulder muscle activation when performing push-ups under different stability conditions and heights. Study design Comparative study by repeated measures. Setting Valencia University laboratory. Participants 29 healthy males participated. Main outcome measures Subjects performed 3 push-ups each with their hands at 2 different heights (10 vs. 65 cm) under stable conditions and using a suspension device. Push-up speed was controlled and the testing order was randomized. The average amplitudes of the electromyographic root mean square of the long head of the triceps brachii (TRICEP), upper trapezius (TRAPS), anterior deltoid (DELT) and clavicular pectoralis (PEC)…
