The “Jacobsen Flap” for the Treatment of Stages III–IV Dupuytren’s Disease: A Review of 98 Cases

The treatment of severe Dupuytren’s disease of the little finger is controversial: several techniques have been described with variable reported results and postoperative complications. This paper reviews 98 cases that underwent surgery between 2001 and 2006 using the Jacobsen flap procedure, a modification of the McCash technique. We found this technique relatively simple and it allowed significant correction of the contracture, with a low rate of complication. We believe this is an excellent alternative to dermofasciectomy or amputation.
Fragility Fractures of the Pelvis.

Fragility fractures of the pelvic ring (FFP) show an increasing frequency. Trauma mechanism, fracture morphology and degree of instability are different from those in high-energy pelvic ring lesions. Little is known about the optimal treatment strategy. A new comprehensive classification system with four categories of increasing instability is presented. It is connected with recommendations for type and invasiveness of treatment. FFP Type I are anterior instabilities only and can be treated conservatively. Incidence and costs of hip fractures compared to acute myocardial infarction in the Italian population: a 4-year survey

Introduction Few data are available about the incidence and costs of hip fractures in Italy. We aimed to determine the impact of hip fractures vs. acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Methods We studied the national hospitalization database to calculate their incidence and costs in adults aged ≥45 between 1999 and 2002. Results In 2002, there were 86,719 hip fractures with a 10.0% increase over 4 years. We observed a predominance of women (77.1%) and a strong age effect: 92.7% of patients were ≥65 years old and 80% of fractures occurred in women aged ≥75, showing a clear relationship with the incidence of osteoporosis. Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) as reviewed in detail elsewhere most frequently involves the knee and finger synovial structures; shoulder involvement is rare: A search through the English literature yielded 18 publications describing 25 cases of PVNS affecting the shoulder joint. Analyzing these reports we found the clinical and radiological findings generally to be nonspecific, often mimicking a malignancy, as in the case presented here of a 16-year-old boy with painful swelling in the area of the left proximal humerus. Purpose To compare the biomechanical properties of different numbers and locations of screws in a multidirectional volar fixed-angle plate in a distal radius osteotomy cadaver model. Methods We created an extra-articular fracture in 16 pairs of fresh-frozen human cadaver radiuses. The 32 specimens were randomized into 4 groups. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is a technique enabling the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) around prostheses after hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA). In this study, we evaluated the consistency of different DXA acquisition modes with 33 patients who had undergone HRA. Patients were scanned with DXA immediately after surgery and at 3-, 6-, and 12-mo time points. All the patients were scanned with dual femur and orthopedic hip acquisition modes and analyzed using 10-region ROI model.
