Recurrent Mesolithic–Neolithic occupation at Sise (western Latvia) and shoreline displacement in the Baltic Sea Basin

2016

A major assemblage of Mesolithic and Neolithic wooden artefacts has been recovered from the bed of the River Užava at Sise, in the coastal belt of western Latvia. New archaeological investigation has also produced wooden remains and other evidence of occupation on the riverbank. On the basis of multi-proxy environmental data and radiocarbon dating, this article offers a first attempt to place the human activity in a palaeolandscape context. The earliest evidence of human presence is provided by wooden artefacts dated to c. 10,500–9700 cal. BP, during the Ancylus Lake transgression. These remains are thought to reflect fishing activities in the shallows of the Ventspils Bay, which existed d…

Wound drainages in total hip arthroplasty: to use or not to use? Review of the literature on current practice.

2013

Aim of this study is to analyze data reported in literature concerning the efficacy of using wound low-vacuum suction drainages in orthopedic surgery after total hip arthroplasty. We analyzed studies concerning the use of drainages in prosthetic hip replacement surgery, performing our research through Pubmed, Cochrane database and Google Scholar, and selecting the ones evaluating the following parameters: bleeding, the need for blood transfusions, number or reinforcement of post-operative medications, length of hospitalization, functional results, periprosthetic and surgical wound infection, post-operative hematoma. Our review did not show any demonstrated advantage from the use of wound dr…

Results of isolated posterolateral corner reconstruction

2010

Abstract Background Isolated posterolateral corner (PLC) tears are relatively rare events. Various surgical techniques to treat posterolateral knee instability have been described; because surgical results are linked to cruciate reconstructions it has been difficult to date to define whether one surgical procedure has better prognosis than another. The goal of this study is to determine the clinical outcome of PLC reconstruction following fibular-based technique. Materials and methods We retrospectively evaluated a case series of patients who received isolated PLC reconstruction between March 2005 and January 2007. Ten patients were surgically treated for isolated injuries and were availabl…

Definition of performance requirements and test cases for offshore/subsea winch drive systems with digital hydraulic motors

2019

Abstract A subsea crane is normally mounted on a floating vessel and equipped with a winch system. The crane can operate in water down to 3000 m. The vessel tends to move up and down due to waves. This heave motion makes offshore lifting operations challenging. In order to ease the winch operation in rough sea, the winch can be equipped with additional systems like active heave compensation and constant tension. In active heave compensation and constant tension system, both motion and force control of the winch are important. This paper presents a digital displacement winch drive system and gives a description of challenges related to subsea lifting operations. The operation challenges are …

Ein modernes Lehrbuch wird 100 Jahre alt

2008

The appearance of Albert Hoffa's "Textbook book of orthopaedics" in 1891 saw the young special discipline enter a new phase of professionalisation in the German-speaking countries. Hoffa defined in this work the scope and methodology of orthopaedics in a sense that is still valid today. By including operative and conservative forms of treatment, he created the foundation for a continued scientific development of the subject. Only with the appearance of Hoffa's work did orthopaedics gain acceptance as a special area by many physicians. The far-reaching influence and significance of the textbook for orthopaedics is portrayed with the aid of historic sources.

Upper thoracic-spine disc degeneration in patients with cervical pain.

2003

To study the relationship of upper thoracic spine degenerative disc contour changes on MR imaging in patients with neck pain. The relation between upper thoracic and cervical spine degenerative disc disease is not well established. One hundred and fifty-six patients referred with cervical pain were studied. There were 73 women and 77 men with a mean age of 48.6 +/- 14.6 years (range, 19 to 83 years). All MR studies were performed with a large 23-cm FOV covering at least from the body of T4 to the clivus. Discs were coded as normal, protrusion/bulge or extrusion.Degenerative thoracic disc contour changes were observed in 13.4% of patients with cervical pain. T2-3 was the most commonly affecte…

Growth patterns at distal radius and tibial shaft in pubertal girls: a 2-year longitudinal study.

2005

Bone changes, in terms of both size and BMD, were assessed longitudinally in pubertal girls. Before puberty, BMD at the distal radius declined, whereas bone size increased, suggesting that normal growing girls experience a transient period of increased bone fragility. This could explain the elevated low-trauma forearm fracture rates reported in earlier studies. Introduction: Longitudinal data on bone growth during puberty are sparse. Such information is needed to understand the sequence of biological changes, the physical and mechanical consequences for the growing skeleton, and the implications for later life. Materials and Methods: The geometric properties and volumetric BMD (vBMD) of the…

A central nervous system-focused treatment approach for people with frozen shoulder: protocol for a randomized clinical trial

2019

Background: Frozen shoulder (FS) is a musculoskeletal condition of poorly understood etiology that results in shoulder pain and large mobility deficits. Despite some physical therapy interventions, such as joint mobilization and exercise, having shown therapeutic benefit, a definitive treatment does not currently exist. The aim of this study will be to compare the effectiveness of a central nervous system (CNS)-directed treatment program versus a standard medical and physical therapy care program on outcomes in participants with FS. Methods/design: The study is a two-group, randomized clinical trial with blinding of participants and assessors. Participants will be recruited via referrals fr…

The Patellofemoral Arthroplasty: The Great Solution, the Great Problem

2012

Unfortunately, many orthopedic surgeons believe that the definite solution for eliminating anterior knee pain in a young patient with multiple operations is the patellofemoral prosthesis (“The Great Solution”). But, they fail to ask themselves the most important question; what is causing the pain? When a patellofemoral prosthesis is implanted in these young patients without finding out the cause of the pain, a more serious problem could be created with a worse solution (“The Great Problem”). The cases we present spotlight this abuse.

Study with surface electromyography, borg scale and rom upper trapezius, deltoid of the three portions (clavicular, acromial, spinal) and the latissi…

2017

The pathologies located at shoulder can be caused by misuse or continued implementation of a sporting practice or physical activity. These pathologies are second position in the ranking of Traumatologics and Orthopedic Clinicals (Windt, Koes, De Jong & Bouter, 1995). Shoulder’s muscle injuries can occur when the arm is in a position that exceeds normal, this fact is repeated in sport, may be the repetition of the hand signal of the inductor problem (Kapandji, 2006). Given the importance of muscle function of the shoulder joint, along the existing boom of new techniques in the specific muscle activation has been carried out an experimental study using a " Test neuro proprioceptive response "…
