A case report of desmoplastic ameloblastoma

2010

Ameloblastomas are the most common benign neoplasm of odontogenic nature. Desmoplastic ameloblastoma (DA) was included in the World Health Organization Classification of Head and Neck Tumors (WHO-2005) as a variant of ameloblastoma with specific clinical, image, and histological features. This case report focuses on a DA which occurred in the mandible of a 25 year-old man. The main signals and symptoms included painless swelling with buccal expansion and tooth displacement. Panoramic and periapical radiographs and cone-bean computed to- mography demonstrated an image mimicking a benign fibro-osseous lesion. The lower border of the mandible was not involved, but tooth displacement could be o…

Influence of Manual Therapies in Lumbar Disc Herniation A Case Study

2017

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has so far been the best way to diagnose disc herniation, the high resolution of images taken on various vertebral tissues allowing the observation, in different planes, of situations such as: the displacement of dural sac and nerve roots, the disc hydration status, which are important data forthe diagnosis and prognosis of disc disease.Manual therapies mainly aim at restoring the lost joint mobility, but also the balance of muscular, skeletal and cranial systems. To this purpose, manipulationtechniques are used for decompression ofthe nerve root affected by disc herniation, spinal hypomobilityandnormalisation ofthe muscles that are peripheral to the lesion.…

The assessment of vertebral fractures in elderly women with recent hip fractures: the BREAK Study

2012

This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of vertebral fractures in elderly women with a recent hip fracture. The burden of vertebral fractures expressed by the Spinal Deformity Index (SDI) is more strictly associated with the trochanteric than the cervical localization of hip fracture and may influence short-term functional outcomes. INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and severity of vertebral fractures in elderly women with recent hip fracture and to assess whether the burden of vertebral fractures may be differently associated with trochanteric hip fractures with respect to cervical hip fractures. METHODS: We studied 689 Italian women aged 60 years or over with …

Analgesic use for postoperative pain: differences arise when comparing departments of surgery

2002

Purpose The goal of the study is to analyse whether the analgesic therapy of postoperative pain during the first 2 days after surgery differs among the different surgical departments. Methods Patients were randomly chosen from among all those who underwent elective surgery. Characteristics of analgesic treatment (drug, dosage, schedule) and pain intensity were determined at the postoperative anaesthetic care unit and in the first and second postoperative days on the ward. All comparisons were carried out by surgical departments. Results Six hundred and twenty-three patients from six surgical departments were studied. Analgesic treatment orders varied greatly among the different departments,…

NAM Therapy-Evidence-Based Results

2020

Many orthodontists working on patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) have shown great enthusiasm for presurgical infant orthopedics (PSIO) to improve surgical outcomes with minimal intervention. Even though every clinician aims to use the best treatment modality for their patients, PSIO effects can be confounded by surgical type and timing of the primary repair, as is discussed in many studies. In such cases, one should be cautious when evaluating the particular outcomes for patients with CLP since it is difficult to differentiate the sole effect of an individual surgical or orthodontic intervention. As with any treatment methodology, nasoalveolar molding (NAM) has both benefits and limi…

Radiation exposure to the hands and the thyroid of the surgeon during intramedullary nailing.

1998

Abstract During 41 procedures of intramedullary nailing of femoral and tibial fractures, the primary surgeon and the first assistant wore ring dosimeters on their dominant index fingers. While the average fluoroscopy time per procedure was 4.6 min, the average dose of radiation to the dominant hand of the primary surgeon was 1.27 mSv and 1.19 mSv to the first assistant. The dose limit for the extremities is 500 mSv per year, as recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection. Extrapolation of the mean dose of the primary surgeon and first assistent per procedure of 1.23 mSv leads to the result that the recommended dose limit of 500 mSv would only be exceeded if more t…

Randomized prospective study on the influence distal block and Gamma 3 nail on the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures of femur

2015

Abstract Objective The purpose of this study is to assess the need to lock the Gamma 3 nail (Stryker, Mahwah, New Jersey, USA) distally for intertrochanteric fractures of femur 31-A1 and 31-A2 of the AO. Materials and methods Details were recorded on a sample of 177 patients with intertrochanteric femoral fractures treated in our hospital by a standard Gamma nail between June 2011 and January 2013. A prospective study was conducted by randomizing patients by year of birth, even numbers with, or odd numbers without, and distal locking, forming two groups of 90 and 87 fractures, respectively. Results The patients treated with a distal locking nail had an increased incidence of medical complic…

Role of comprehensive geriatric assessment in the management of osteoporotic hip fracture in the elderly: an overview

2013

Purpose: To highlight the advantages of comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) over usual care in the management of elderly patients with fragility hip fractures in terms of reducing the related mortality and disability. Method: An overview of publications on the topic was conducted using the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases. Results: Several models of geriatric and orthopedic comanagement have been developed in recent years, all characterized by a variable degree of integration, and they have been shown to reduce complications, disability and mortality in elderly hip-fracture patients. Preoperatively, CGA should identify the comorbidities that need to be treated in view of surgery, so as to …

Tomographic evaluation of dentoskeletal effects of rapid maxillary expansion using Haas and Hyrax palatal expanders in children : a randomized clinic…

2020

Background Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is a usual procedure for correcting the transversal maxillary deficiency. Among the most used appliances are the Haas type (tooth-tissue-borne) and Hyrax (tooth-borne) whose main difference is the design. This study aimed to evaluate the dentoskeletal effects of RME using two different expanders in children. Material and methods The sample was composed of 42 children of both gender presenting unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite with mean age 9.49 (SD± 1.35). Patients were randomized into two groups according to the type of expander: Hyrax (n= 21, 9 boys and 12 girls) and Haas (n= 21, 11 boys and 10 girls). Multiplanar coronal and axial slic…
