PURPOSE Migration measurements of acetabular components using a special computer aided method (EBRA = abbreviation for the German term "Ein-Bild-Rontgenanalyse") were performed to evaluate early results of the implants and predict aseptic loosening. METHODS Standard ap-radiographs of the pelvis were marked, specific points were digitised. Simulating the spatial situation the programme computes longitudinal and vertical migration of the cup. 74 acetabular components in 71 patients could be studied by migration measurements. Is there still an indication for operative treatment of femoral neck fractures with a ceramic hemiprosthesis?

From 1985 to 1995, 417 patients with dislocated medial femoral neck fractures (Garden III–IV) were treated with hemiarthroplasty using a Biolox ceramic head. The average patient age at the time of operation was 81.5 years. A total of 140 survivors was available for follow-up examination with a mean prosthesis longevity of 55.8 months. The Harris hip score recorded a mean of 70.6 points. At the time of follow up, 5 patients had severe hip pain, and in 8 the roentgenographic examination revealed protrusio acetabuli. Five of these 8 patients underwent revision surgery for replacement of the cup, leaving the stem in situ.

The German historical museum of orthopaedic surgery was founded 1959 in Wurzburg. The main task of this institution is the furtherance of science in medical-history. Since the beginning, 41 years ago, the number of books and exhibits increased continuously. The library of the museum is the biggest public collection in Germany and contains more then 6000 books and publications in orthopaedics. Furthermore the museum includes a big amount of exoprostheses of the upper and lower limb, alloarthroplasties of hip- and knee-joints, traumatologic implants and instruments of orthopaedic surgery. In comparison with other operative procedures, the history of meniscal-surgery offers some particular differences. Over a long period of time injuries of the semilunar-cartilages of the knee-joint were not generally recognised. In the 18th century only was the clinical picture roughly outlined. There is evidence, that parts of the meniscus were removed much earlier than we have historic proof of. These meniscal fragments were generally mistaken for "loose bodies" in the joints, not knowing the exact etiology. Currently, antegrade intramedullary nailing and minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) represent the main surgical alternatives in distal tibial fractures. However, neither choice is optimal for all bony and soft tissue injuries. The Retrograde Tibial Nail (RTN) is a small-caliber prototype implant, which is introduced through a 2-cm-long incision at the tip of the medial malleolus with stab incisions sufficient for interlocking. During this project, we investigated the feasibility of retrograde tibial nailing in a cadaver model and conducted biomechanical testing. UNLABELLED Intraoperative ultrasound of the spine has been used in neurosurgery (tumours) and traumatology (reposition of fractured vertebral bodies fragments). AIM To describe initial experiences with this method and to document the opportunities and problems. METHOD 24 nucleotomies were documented and evaluated.
