We studied bone mass and metabolism in 30 adult women (age 28.5 +/- 1.3) with thalassemia major (TM) and evaluated whether prolonged hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was able to optimize bone accrual. TM patients had reduced bone mass, increased bone turnover and lower serum gonadotropin and estradiol levels compared with 10 normal women of similar age. A significant correlation was found between bone mass and sex hormone levels. Six TM patients with normal ovarian function had normal bone turnover markers and modestly low bone mass (lumbar spine -1.29 +/- 0.31; femoral neck -0.60+/-0.21; Z-score). International audience; Corrective surgery of prominent ears may be justified for social or aesthetic reasons during childhood or adulthood. Post-operative complications occur in approximately 0 to 8.4% of cases. This case describes a rare atlanto-axoid rotatory subluxation after bilateral surgical correction of prominent ears under general anesthesia. Orthopedic treatment was done after two months of medical roaming outside of our center. The one-year post-operative clinic consultation and radiological exam were normal. Quantifying the contribution of arm postural tremor to the outcome of goal-directed pointing task by displacement measures.

A method for quantifying the outcome of goal-directed postural pointing was presented and used for relating the tremor output to the oscillations of single arm landmarks. The displacement of reflective markers placed on shoulder, upper arm, forearm, and hand were measured by an optoelectronic motion capture system in nine subjects holding a laser penlight pointed at a target. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the measured displacement series (from 7:1 for shoulder marker to 30:1 for hand marker) demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed system to carry out tremor analysis. Internal Fixation in Postpartum Symphysis Pubis Rupture: Report of Three Cases

We present three patients with postpartum symphysis pubis rupture whose severe complaints persisted after conservative treatment. All three ruptures were stabilized with open reduction and internal fixation. There were no postoperative problems, and implants were removed after a mean period of six months. Patients were free of complaints after implant removal. In select cases, operative treatment of postpartum symphysiolysis may be indicated.

Retroaortic left renal vein: a report of six cases

Six cases of retroaortic left renal vein have been studied, two in corpses and four by means of Computed Tomography. Any previous pathology has been rejected. The total number of dissected specimens was 116, whereas the patients with non-pathological retroperitoneum studied by CT numbered 170. In our six cases, the left renal vein formed a single trunk of considerable size, retroaortic position and directed obliquely towards the inferior vena cava.
