"Ab initio" structure solution from electron diffraction data obtained by a combination of automated diffraction tomography and precession technique

2009

Using a combination of our recently developed automated diffraction tomography (ADT) module with precession electron technique (PED), quasi-kinematical 3D diffraction data sets of an inorganic salt (BaSO(4)) were collected. The lattice cell parameters and their orientation within the data sets were found automatically. The extracted intensities were used for "ab initio" structure analysis by direct methods. The data set covered almost the complete set of possible symmetrically equivalent reflections for an orthorhombic structure. The structure solution in one step delivered all heavy (Ba, S) as well as light atoms (O). Results of the structure solution using direct methods, charge flipping …

A new interpretation of the 22-tricosenoic acid Langmuir-Blodgett structures identified as triclinic by Rheeds

1990

Abstract One of the original structural studies on Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayers of 22-tricosenoic acid using the technique of reflection high-energy electron diffraction was performed by Peterson and Russell (1984, Phil. Mag. A, 49, 463). In their paper, four distinct structural arrangements of the long-chain fatty acid were identified, where the arrangement adopted by a particular sample was found to depend on the substrate and deposition conditions. The identification of the C2 H4 subcells in each of these arrangements was made on the basis of a number of assumptions, some of which have subsequently been shown to be erroneous. In particular, the identification of a triclinic subcell…

Mechanism of pulsed electron irradiation of the PLZT X/65/35 ceramics

2005

The comprehensive study of high-current pulsed electron irradiation effect on the structure and lattice dynamics as well as Atomic Force (AFM) and Laser Confocal Scanning microscope (LSCM) surface imaginaries of PLZT 8/65/35 ceramics have been performed. X-ray powder diffraction studies show the transformation of the cubic perovskite Pm-3m (Z = 1) into orthorhombic Pmmm (Z = 1) structure for the sample irradiated by one pulse (dose 6 × 1014 electrons/cm2) and into cubic Pm-3m with increased lattice volume and more ordered structure at irradiating by 10 and 100 pulses (dose 6 × 1015 and 6 × 1016 el/cm2). A consequence, the changes of number, intensity and phonon modes position occur in Raman…

Thallium under extreme compression

2016

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of the high-pressure behavior of thallium. X-ray diffraction experiments have been carried out at room temperature up to 125 GPa using diamond-anvil cells, nearly doubling the pressure range of previous experiments. We have confirmed the hcp-fcc transition at 3.5 GPa and determined that the fcc structure remains stable up to the highest pressure attained in the experiments. In addition, HP-HT experiments have been performed up to 8 GPa and 700 K by using a combination of x-ray diffraction and a resistively heated diamond-anvil cell. Information on the phase boundaries is obtained, as well as crystallographic information on the HT bcc …

Post-spinel transformations and equation of state inZnGa2O4: Determination at high pressure byin situx-ray diffraction

2009

Room-temperature angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction measurements on spinel ZnGa{sub 2}O{sub 4} up to 56 GPa show evidence of two structural phase transformations. At 31.2 GPa, ZnGa{sub 2}O{sub 4} undergoes a transition from the cubic spinel structure to a tetragonal spinel structure similar to that of ZnMn{sub 2}O{sub 4}. At 55 GPa, a second transition to the orthorhombic marokite structure (CaMn{sub 2}O{sub 4}-type) takes place. The equation of state of cubic spinel ZnGa{sub 2}O{sub 4} is determined: V{sub 0} = 580.1(9) {angstrom}{sup 3}, B{sub 0} = 233(8) GPa, B'{sub 0} = 8.3(4), and B''{sub 0} = -0.1145 GPa{sup -1} (implied value); showing that ZnGa{sub 2}O{sub 4} is one of the less comp…

A study of KNbO3in the pressure range to 12 GPa using synchrotron radiation

1997

Abstract Orthorhombic KNbO3 has been studied by x-ray diffraction as a function of pressure. The lattice cell parameters, volume and stability range of this phase have been determined as a function of the applied pressure. No structural transformation has been observed up to 12 GPa. The resulting P-V data are fitted to a Murnaghan equation state of first-order.

Detection of morphotropic phase boundary in A-site/Ca-substituted Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 complex oxides ferroelectric system

2020

Abstract Vibrational and structural properties of lead-free piezoelectric (1-x)Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3–xCaTiO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.00) solid solutions have been investigated using Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Different anomalies were detected and analyzed taking into consideration the phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase at room temperature. All Raman bands were interpreted through the variation in the peak positions (frequency) and the corresponding half-widths at half maximum (HWHM) as a function of x. XRD used as a complementary technique to Raman spectroscopy, showed that the rhombohedral – orthorhombic phase transition went gradually through an intermediate phase consist…

Thickness and temperature dependent structure of Cd arachidate Langmuir-Blodgett films

1992

Abstract The structure of monolayers of Cd arachidate on water and on solid support, and the thickness dependent changes when building up a multilayer via the LB technique are studied by means of grazing incidence diffraction of X-ray. In monolayers the perpendicularly oriented amphiphilic molecules are arranged in a hexagonal lattice, whereas for thicker layers (even for three layers) they crystallize in an orthorhombic unit cell with a reduced molecular are ( A = 18.2 A 2 ) compared to that of the monolayer ( A = 19.7 A 2 ). In-plane diffraction measurements with wave vector transfer perpendicular to the surface (rod scans) could prove for multilayers a maximum tilt angle of 2°. The data …

Giant conductivity enhancement: Pressure-induced semiconductor-metal phase transition in Cd0.90Zn0.1Te

2019

Element doping and pressure compression may change material properties for improved performance in applications. We report pressure-induced metallization in the semiconductor $\mathrm{C}{\mathrm{d}}_{0.90}\mathrm{Z}{\mathrm{n}}_{0.1}\mathrm{Te}$. Transport measurements showed an overall resistivity drop of 11 orders of magnitude under compression up to 12 GPa, which is indicative of a metallization transition. X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the sample underwent a structural transition from a cubic-$F4\overline{3}m$ phase (zinc blende) to a cubic-$Fm\overline{3}m$ phase (rock salt) at about 5.5 GPa, followed by another transition to an orthorhombic $Cmcm$ structure at 13 GPa. A…
