Investigation on the influence of the surface resin rich layer on the thermoelastic signal from different composite laminate lay-ups

2006

This work presents a set of experimental results based on the measured thermoelastic signal from GRP composite coupons adopting different lay-ups. A comparison is made with the thermoelastic signal predicted by two different analytical models: one based on the classical law of the thermoelastic effect for orthotropic materials, and the other based on a novel theory accounting for the presence of a resin layer on the external surface of the composite structure. The composite coupons were designed such to determine a significant difference in the predictions made by the two theoretical models. Experimental results have shown a far better match with the predictions based on the novel theory ac…

Hand verification for flexural strength of existing R.C. floors subject to degradation phenomena

2015

Abstract In the present paper, a simplified model for hand verification of the flexural and shear strength of existing corroded T beams cast in place of lightened R.C. orthotropic slabs forming floors is presented and discussed. Diffused and pitting corrosion on steel bars, compressive concrete strength degradation and concrete bond strength degradation are included in the model. The original contribution of the paper is evaluation of the flexural and shear strength considering both the cases of strain compatibility and absence of compatibility and considering the main parameters governing the corrosion process. An arch-resistant model for the calculus of the flexural and shear strength of …

Experimental determination of mode I fracture parameters in orthotropic materials by means of Digital Image Correlation

2020

Abstract The mode I fracture parameters for an orthotropic body are directly calculated from full-field deformation measurements provided by Digital Image Correlation (DIC). Three complementary and direct approaches are evaluated and compared: (i) the determination of the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) by fitting the displacement field using the analytical expression proposed by Lekhnitskii; (ii) the determination of the J-Integral by using the Energy Domain Integral (EDI) formulation on the raw DIC data; and (iii) the calculation of the J-Integral using the EDI approach on the displacement data fitted using Lekhnitskii’s formulation. A comparative experimental study is performed by testing …

Numerical vibroacoustic analysis of plates with constrained-layer damping patches

2011

International audience; A numerical vibroacoustic model that can manage multilayered plates locally covered with damping patches is presented. All the layers can have an on-axis orthotropic viscoelastic behavior. Continuity of displacements and transverse shear stresses at each interface is enforced, which permits to write the entire displacement field in function of the displacements of the-common-first layer, leading to a two-dimensional plate model. The problem is then discretized by Rayleigh-Ritz's method using a trigonometric basis that includes both sine and cosine functions in order to treat various boundary conditions. The excitation can be of mechanical kind (concentrated or distri…

Estimates for Divergence Velocities of Axially Moving Orthotropic Thin Plates

2014

Some models for axially moving orthotropic thin plates are investigated analytically via methods of complex analysis to derive estimates for critical plate velocities. Linearised Kirchhoff plate theory is used, and the energy forms of steady-state models are considered with homogeneous and inhomogeneous tension profiles in the cross direction of the plate. With the help of the energy forms, some limits for the divergence velocity of the plate are found analytically. In numerical examples, the derived lower limits for the divergence velocity are analysed for plates with small flexural rigidity. peerReviewed

A Quantitative Analysis of the Thermoelastic Effect in CFRP Composite Materials

2010

:  In this study the thermoelastic signal from carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminates is investigated. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental values of the thermoelastic signal is reported, with the theoretical predictions obtained from two different quantitative models. These models are based on the classic thermoelastic effect law extended to the case of orthotropic materials (by using the mesomechanical or bulk approach), and the modified law assuming that the surface resin-rich layer behaves as a strain witness of the laminate. It is found that the theoretical predictions of the two models can be strongly and differently influenced by the intrinsic orthotropy of…

Complete in-plane elastic characterisation under tensile tests of angle-ply laminates composed of polymer-matrix layers

2002

In this paper we present a new strategy to completely characterise the in-plane elastic properties of a large range of angle-ply laminates using only unidirectional tests. We consider laminates having the same number of identical plies in the α and – α directions. This new method uses some preceding results found by Verchery for orthotropic laminates, namely the conditions of existence of a specific direction ω, in which the shear-extension coupling is null. The characterisation of the laminate is then made using the results of three tensile tests: two in the orthotropy axes, and the third one in the ω direction, in order to have always a pure one-dimensional state of stress. We show that …

On the limit velocity and buckling phenomena of axially moving orthotropic membranes and plates

2011

In this paper, we consider the static stability problems of axially moving orthotropic membranes and plates. The study is motivated by paper production processes, as paper has a fiber structure which can be described as orthotropic on the macroscopic level. The moving web is modeled as an axially moving orthotropic plate. The original dynamic plate problem is reduced to a two-dimensional spectral problem for static stability analysis, and solved using analytical techniques. As a result, the minimal eigenvalue and the corresponding buckling mode are found. It is observed that the buckling mode has a shape localized in the regions close to the free boundaries. The localization effect is demon…

COMPUTATIONAL HOMOGENIZATION OF POLYCRYSTALLINE MATERIALS WITH PORES: A THREE-DIMENSIONAL GRAIN BOUNDARY FORMULATION

2012

In this study, the influence of porosity on the elastic effective properties of polycrystalline materials is investigated using a 3D grain boundary micro mechanical model. The volume fraction of pores, their size and distribution can be varied to better simulate the response of real porous materials. The formulation is built on a boundary integral representation of the elastic problem for the grains, which are modeled as 3D linearly elastic orthotropic domains with arbitrary spatial orientation. The artificial polycrystalline morphology is represented using 3D Voronoi Tessellations. The formulation is expressed in terms of intergranular fields, namely displacements and tractions that play …
