Beam current oscillations driven by cyclotron instabilities in a minimum-Belectron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma

2014

Experimental observation of cyclotron instabilities in a minimum-B confined electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma is reported. The instabilities are associated with strong microwave emission and a burst of energetic electrons escaping the plasma, and explain the periodic ms-scale oscillation of the extracted beam currents. Such non-linear effects are detrimental for the confinement of highly charged ions due to plasma perturbations at shorter periodic intervals in comparison with their production time. It is shown that the repetition rate of the periodic instabilities in oxygen plasmas increases with increasing magnetic field strength and microwave power and decreases with increasi…

Peculiarities of coherent optical oscillation in Sn_2P_2S_6 crystals

2010

We show analytically and numerically that the unusual photorefractive nonlinear response of Sn2P2S6 crystals leads to a variety of new features of coherent optical oscillation. In addition to the explanation of the known peculiarities, new features are predicted.

Landau Fermi Liquid Theory and Beyond

2014

In this chapter we consider the Landau theory of the Fermi liquid that has a long history and remarkable results in describing a numerous properties of the electron liquid in ordinary metals and Fermi liquids of the \(^3\)He type. The theory is based on the assumption that elementary excitations determine the physics at low temperatures, resembling that of weakly interacting Fermi gas. These excitations behave as quasiparticles with a certain effective mass. The effective mass \(M^*\) exhibits a simple universal behavior, for it is independent of the temperature, pressure, and magnetic field strength and is a parameter of the theory. Microscopically deriving the equation determining the eff…

Highly Correlated Fermi Liquid in Heavy-Fermion Metals: Magnetic Properties

2014

In this chapter we show how the FCQPT theory works, when describing the behavior of HF metals under the application of magnetic field. We show that a large body of experimental data regarding the thermodynamic, transport and relaxation properties collected in measurements on HF metals can be well explained. It is demonstrated that the experimental data exhibit the scaling behavior.

High Order Harmonics from a Molecule: Evidence of the Nuclear Motion

2007

The electromagnetic spectrum emitted by a molecule driven by a laser presents harmonics and satellite lines whose separation is equal to the oscillation frequency of the nuclei. Full quantum and semiclassical calculations are presented.

Magnus expansion and the two-neutrino oscillations in matter

1990

We show that the Magnus expansion can help to deal with the problem of matter-neutrino oscillations in the nonadiabatic regime of the two-neutrino-flavor case. An analytic result for the electron-neutrino survival probability is derived in a quite simple way without reference to any particular electron density.

TRANSIENT DYNAMICS AND ASYMPTOTIC POPULATIONS IN A DRIVEN METASTABLE QUANTUM SYSTEM

2013

The transient dynamics of a periodically driven metastable quantum system, interacting with a heat bath, is investigated. The time evolution of the populations, within the framework of the Feynman–Vernon influ- ence functional and in the discrete variable representation, is analyzed by varying the parameters of the external driving. The results display strong non-monotonic behaviour of the populations with respect to the driving frequency.

Friedel Oscillations in Relativistic Nuclear Matter

1994

We calculate the low-momentum N-N effective potential obtained in the OBE approximation, inside a nuclear plasma at finite temperature, as described by the relativistic $ \sigma $-$ \omega $ model. We analyze the screening effects on the attractive part of the potential in the intermediate range as density or temperature increase. In the long range the potential shows Friedel-like oscillations instead of the usual exponential damping. These oscillations arise from the sharp edge of the Fermi surface and should be encountered in any realistic model of nuclear matter.

Aging effects manifested in the potential-energy landscape of a model glass former

2010

We present molecular dynamics simulations of a model glass-forming liquid (the binary Kob-Anderson Lennard-Jones model) and consider the distributions of inherent energies and metabasins during aging. In addition to the typical protocol of performing a temperature jump from a high temperature to a low destination temperature, we consider the temporal evolution of the distributions after an 'up-jump', i.e. from a low to a high temperature. In this case the distribution of megabasin energies exhibits a transient two-peak structure. Our results can qualitatively be rationalized in terms of a trap model with a Gaussian distribution of trap energies. The analysis is performed for different syste…
