Objective: A growing body of evidence indicates that risk of CV events is higher in HIV-infected patients (HIV+) when compared to HIV-uninfected persons (HIV-). This enhanced risk may in part be mediated through preclinical CV damage. Large artery stiffness, a well-documented marker of arterial damage and predictor of adverse CV prognosis, is usually assessed by measuring aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV). Several studies examined arterial stiffness in HIV+ with inconsistent results. Sir William Osler is celebrated today not only for his contributions to the advancement of medical education, but also for the humanism he brought to the practice of medicine. He was a doctor whose bedside skills and manners were emulated, and can legitimately be called an infectious diseases specialist. Nonetheless, he was also a humanist in the broader sense of the term, a student of human affairs and human nature, who emphasised compassion for the individual. Nowadays the call for a return to the centrality of man and the thrust toward humanization of medicine are growing stronger: in this respect we think that William Osler’s life can be considered as one of those exemplar lives that changed the course of medicine, as he was able to overcome the duality of science and humanity, focusing on the ethical values capable of bridging the past to the future of medicine.
Paciente con enfermedad de Rendu-Osler-Weber y malformaciones arteriovenosas pulmonares tratadas satisfactoriamente mediante embolización

Se presenta el caso de una mujer de 41 anos de edad con multiples malformaciones arteriovenosas pulmonares en el seno de la enfermedad de Rendu-Osler-Weber. Tenia antecedentes de telangiectasias cutaneas y mucosas, epistaxis frecuentes y un episodio de embolia de la arteria central de la retina del ojo derecho. A raiz de los estudios radiologicos y de resonancia magnetica practicados se detectaron malformaciones en los territorios vasculares de ambos pulmones (lobulo inferior derecho y Ungula).
