Rumor de pañuelo blanco: historia, memoria y representaciones literarias de Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo
2018
Ability to Measure and Count in Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers
2021
The illiterate brothers’ elementary ability to measure and count fluently is a striking feature in the Finnish author Aleksis Kivi’s Seven Brothers (Seitsemän veljestä, 1870), a novel that was published before the metric system was introduced in Finland. The seven main characters describe their everyday life and environment and make work- related decisions using numbers, amounts, and measures of distance, area, volume, and weight without hesitation. They are also familiar with some elementary calculations. At the same time, their inability to read arouses desperate anguish in them. I analyze the ways the brothers use numbers and measurements, and the importance of these skills in their life…
Saada kaikki ja olla onnellinen : äitiyrittäjyys tuottavuuden ja affektien aikakaudella
2021
Artikkelissa tutkin uusliberaalin postfeminismin kehyksen läpi työntekijyyden ja äitiyden ristiriitaisuuksia ja ratkaisuyrityksiä. Empiirisenä kohteena on äitiyrittäjyysilmiö.
What is immersive journalism?
2020
Immersive technologies are opening gateways to virtual realities that might change journalism forever. In the virtual world, journalism balances on the edge between imaginary approaches to fact-based creation and extended options for fakes. The journalistic maneuverings between reality and virtual reality are particularly intriguing to work with because they put the truth-seeking values of journalism into play. How can immersive technologies be applied to improve meaningful reporting and investigate storytelling in journalism? How can skills and knowledge of virtual reality empower news professionals? And how can journalism codes of ethics help shape the new platforms, shape a future in whi…
The role of mothers' beliefs in students' self-concept of ability development
2018
The aim of this study was to investigate whether the child-related competence beliefs of mothers are associated with the development of Finnish adolescents' self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability during their transition from primary to lower secondary school and whether these associations depend on adolescents' level of performance. The results showed that, first, adolescents' self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability decreased over time. The impact of maternal beliefs on the linear trend of the self-concept of mathematics and literacy ability was dependent on the level of students' performance. Mothers' high beliefs buffered against the decrease in adolescents' self-concep…

Open Badge Concept in Education - Benefits and Challenges
2015
Digital learning badges offer new possibilities alongside conventional certificates. The Open Badge concept is one of the most common implementations of learning badges in use. The concept was piloted and the services required by it were developed in a project carried out in Finland in 2014. This research highlights the utilization opportunities noted in connection with the Open Badge concept and also challenges related to it. The paper also discusses some applications created during the project that enable the utilization of the concept. peerReviewed
Open Badges in Higher Education
2014
Open Badges is an open source code concept developed by the Mozilla Foundation to identify the learner's knowledge and skills and to display them in a modern way. Although the concept was originally meant to display informal learning, it can also be applied to formal education. Indicating competences electronically makes it possible to display competences for which traditional certificates are unsuitable. It also enables completely new features such as a restricted validity period for a certificate. The Open Badge concept also can make education marketing more effective, and it might be thought as a future solution for identifying competences acquired earlier when moving from one study leve…
The role of parents' and teachers' child-related competence beliefs in the development of students' self-concept of ability
2017
Individuals’ perceptions about their abilities, that is, self-concepts of abilities, are crucial determinants of academic achievement and education-related choices. The aims of this research were to examine the role of parents’ and teachers’ beliefs about children’s abilities in students’ self-concept of ability in the domains of literacy and mathematics, and whether the role of parents and teachers is different among boys and girls, and among low- and high-performing students. These questions were examined using three different data sets: the LIGHT study, the Jyväskylä Entrance into Primary School (JEPS) study and the STAIRWAY study. In all three studies, the participants were Finnish. In …
The Hybrid Airline Model. Generating Quality for Passengers
2017
This research aims to investigate the different strategies adopted by the airline companies in adapting to the ongoing changes while developing products and services for passengers in order to increase their yield, load factor and passenger satisfaction. Finding a balance between costs and services quality in the airline industry is a crucial task for every airline wanting to gain a competitive advantage on the market. Also, the rise of the hybrid business operating model has brought up many challenges for airlines as the line between legacy carriers and low-cost carriers is getting thinner in terms of costs and innovative ideas to create a superior product for the passengers.
