Evolution of otosclerosis to cochlear implantation.

2011

Abstract Introduction Otosclerosis is an osteodystrophy of the labyrinthine capsule producing conductive hearing loss. If the process invades the cochlea, a sensorineural hearing loss usually takes place. The cochlear implant is a good alternative in these patients. Objective To ascertain the behaviour of cochlear implantation (CI) in otosclerosis. Material and methods We reviewed a database of 250 patients who underwent CI, performing a retrospective study of 13 patients with clinical, audiological and/or imaging findings of bilateral otosclerosis. The 26 ears were studied as to their natural history, previous surgeries, evolution to profound hearing loss, computed tomography (CT) images, …

Otosclerosis associated with type B-1 inner ear malformation

2010

Malformations of bony inner ear are rare anomalies occurring in approximately 20% of patients with congenital sensorineural hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss is usually associated with abnormalities of the external and middle ear. Recent reports of patients with lateral semicircular canal malformations indicate inner ear malformations to be associated with sensorineural or conductive hearing loss. Differential diagnosis of conductive hearing loss should include otosclerosis, isolated ossicular deformities, inner ear anomalies or a combination of these. In this report, a case is described with right vestibule-lateral semicircular canal dysplasia presenting at our centre with bilateral ot…

Learning curve for piezosurgery in well-trained otological surgeons

2009

Abstract Objective Piezosurgery is an ultrasound instrument (24.7-29.5 kHz) capable of cutting bone without necrosis and nonmineralized tissue damage. The aim of this work has been to determine the time required for a well-trained surgeon to perform otological surgery with the piezoelectric device. Study Design Case series with planned data collection. Sixty-three patients affected by otosclerosis and 63 by chronic otitis media were enrolled. For each disease, patients were divided into three numerically equal groups, with each group assigned to a well-trained otological surgeon. Patients underwent stapedotomy (n = 63) and intact canal wall tympanoplasty (n = 63) with the piezoelectric devi…
