Insights into how nucleotide supplements enhance the peroxidase-mimicking DNAzyme activity of the G-quadruplex/hemin system

2012

Since the initial discovery of the catalytic capability of short DNA fragments, this peculiar enzyme-like property (termed DNAzyme) has continued to garner much interest in the scientific community because of the virtually unlimited applications in developing new molecular devices. Alongside the exponential rise in the number of DNAzyme applications in the last past years, the search for convenient ways to improve its overall efficiency has only started to emerge. Credence has been lent to this strategy by the recent demonstration that the quadruplex-based DNAzyme proficiency can be enhanced by ATP supplements. Herein, we have made a further leap along this path, trying first of all to deci…

Recent developments in and applications of resonance ionization mass spectrometry

1999

Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry (RIMS) has nowadays reached the status of a routine method for sensitive and selective ultratrace determination of long-lived radioactive isotopes in environmental, biomedical and technical samples. It provides high isobaric suppression, high to ultra-high isotopic selectivity and good overall efficiency. Experimental detection limits are as low as 106 atoms per sample and permit the fast and sensitive determination of ultratrace amounts of radiotoxic contaminations. Experimental arrangements for the detection of different radiotoxic isotopes, e.g. 236–244Pu, 89,90Sr and 99Tc in environmental samples are described, and the application of RIMS to the ul…

Agricultural externalities and environmental regulation: evaluating good practice in citrus production

2006

Economic activity takes place in a scenario characterized by an increasing number of environmental regulations aimed at bringing under control the emission of contaminating wastes. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of transforming a code of good practice in nitrogen fertilization on Spanish citrus fruit farms into an environmental regulation of compulsory fulfilment. Using data envelopment techniques, we calculate unrestricted and environmentally regulated short-run maximum profits. Both profit values are then used to compute an index of the cost of regulation. Our results suggest that the cost of shifting from a merely recommended practice to a binding rule is low. On average, the loss…

Reverse electrodialysis

2016

Abstract Reverse electrodialysis (RED) technology has grown significantly in the last decade, gaining a fast increase in its technology readiness level and presenting some interesting examples of RED pilot systems operating under very different real environments. In this chapter, an overview of technological developments and piloting examples are reported. In particular, a short introduction is given on the historical trend of RED technology growth, followed by a careful analysis of which feed solutions can be adopted and how these can affect the process performance, potentials, and applications. Most prominent fluid dynamics aspects for the RED process are presented, highlighting how these…

Efficacy and safety of ramucirumab (RAM) for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with elevated alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) following first-line soraf…

2019

Abstract Background REACH (NCT01140347) and REACH-2 (NCT02435433) were two global, randomized, double-blind, placebo (PL)-controlled multicenter, phase 3 studies of RAM vs PL in patients with HCC after prior sorafenib. REACH-2 confirmed overall survival (OS) benefit of RAM for patients with baseline AFP ≥400ng/mL, consistent with results in a prespecified subgroup of patients in REACH with AFP ≥400ng/mL. Methods Post-hoc pooled analyses were performed to examine efficacy and safety in three age subgroups ( Results Both intention-to-treat populations were pooled (542 patients in total). Within each age subgroup, baseline characteristics between treatment arms were similar. Patients of Conclu…

Constructal law optimization of a boiler

2017

The paper aims at the optimization of the design of a biomass boiler under the inspiration of the Constructal Law by Bejan. The boiler is of the smoke tubes typology, fuel being biomass pellets. The smoke tubes are 16 and are placed in a staggered configuration. A model is built in MATLAB environment, based on empirical correlations and the mean log temperature methodology. The analysis is based on the development of a wide parametric analysis that involves variations of diameters, numbers and positioning of the tubes. Results are based on the concept of the overall performance coefficient methodology and investigate both the pressure drops variation and the thermal power generated in the d…

A Constructal Law optimization of a boiler inspired by Life Cycle thinking

2018

Abstract The aim of the paper is to explore how design optimization contributes to a technology's ecological evolution. The article develops this concept through an application of Constructal Law, used to account for the “evolution” of technologies design (configuration, shape, structure, pattern, rhythm), and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), used for quantifying the environmental impacts of the design choices. The combination of both methods assesses how technology evolution affects the environment during its life, extending the concept of evolution of design. The study is applied to a case study of a real biomass boiler. The study analyses basic case and a series of alternative scenarios opti…

Pair potential calculation of molecular associations: a vectorized version

1991

Abstract The program AMYRVF is a vectorized and largely modified version of a previous program called AMYR for calculating molecular associations by means of Fraga's pair-wise atom-atom potential. Three new minimization procedures have been implemented as well as other improvements such as the inclusion of new pair-wise dispersion energy terms with damping functions, and the calculation of topological indices. Benchmark tests have been carried out on an IBM 3090 150E VF; the timings for the new vector algorithms and for the standard scalar computations, as well as the dependence of the overall performance gain on the size of interacting systems are reported for the VS Fortran 2.4 compiler e…

Doubling Recruitment of Pediatric Low-grade Glioma within Two Decades does not change Outcome – Report from the German LGG Studies

2021

Successive multicenter studies for pediatric low-grade glioma (LGG) in Germany were accompanied by a doubling of annual recruitment over 2 decades. We investigated whether this increase conveyed a change of epidemiologic characteristics or survival.Participating centers reported 4634 patients with the radiologic/histologic diagnosis of LGG (1996-2018), rising from 109 to 278/year. Relating these numbers to all pediatric CNS tumors registered at the German Childhood Cancer Registry, the LGG fraction and annual crude incidence rates increased (32% to 51%; 0.94 to 2.12/100,000 children/adolescents15 years). The consecutive LGG studies recruited 899 (HIT-LGG 1996), 1592 (SIOP-LGG 2004), and 183…
