The influence of improvisation activities on speaking confidence of EFL student teachers

2020

The purpose of the present study was to explore the application of improvisation activities in English teacher education, specifically to investigate their influence on the student teachers’ confidence when speaking English spontaneously. The improvisation activities consisted of storytelling, conversations and status expressions. Data were drawn from both pre- and post-questionnaires and retrospective texts. The statistical findings showed significant improvements in the student teachers’ level of speaking confidence and degree of relaxation while speaking English. The findings of the qualitative analysis confirmed this, and participants stated that the fun, collaboration and high degree o…

Improvisation et processus compositionnel dans la genèse de Fenêtre Ovale de Karl Naëgelen

2015

Improvisation and Compositional Process in Karl Naëgelen’s Fenêtre Ovale
This paper is centred around the analysis of the creative process underlying the genesis of a recent work of music by French composer Karl Naëgelen, Fenêtre Ovale (2011), written in collaboration with two free improvisers active on the Parisian scene, Ève Risser (piano) and Joris Rühl (clarinet). This piece is remarkable in that, contrary to the vast majority of works composed in a so-called “comprovisation” framework, where the interaction between the composed and the improvised elements essentially takes place during the moments of performance, its score never actually requires any act of improvisation from its…

Tonal Hierarchies in Jazz Improvisation

1995

Statistical methods were used to investigate 18 bebop-styled jazz improvisations based on the so- called Rhythm Changes chord progression. The data were compared with results obtained by C. L. Krumhansl and her colleagues in empirical tests investigating the perceived stability of the tones in the chromatic scale in various contexts. Comparisons were also made with data on the statistical distribution of the 12 chromatic tones in actual European art music. It was found that the chorus- level hierarchies (measured over a whole chorus) are remarkably similar to the rating profiles obtained in empirical tests and to the relative frequencies of the tones in European art music. The chord- level …

Interaction affordances in traditional instruments and tablet computers: A study of children’s musical group creativity

2019

In order to promote children’s collaborative musical creativity in new digital environments, we need a better understanding not only of the sound production capabilities provided by the new digital tools, but also of the interaction affordances involved. This study focuses on the interactional patterns emerging in children’s musical creativity, comparing creative group processes on iPad tablet computers (with GarageBand software) to processes on traditional musical instruments. Both instrumentations were assigned to five groups of four 10–12-year-olds for creating sound landscapes for a “space” movie. The traditional instrument groups’ processes were characterized by peer teaching as well …

The Phenomenon of Social Enterprise in Austria: A Triangulated Descriptive Study

2011

Abstract There is little to no existing research on the phenomenon of social enterprises (SEs) in Austria. To enable subsequent comparative studies, the author first traces social enterprises' conceptual underpinnings from most current research found in leading journals and subsequently creates a framework based upon social origins theory for use on Austria's social enterprises. In order to validate the findings, the author employs a triangulated research approach, including an online-based survey, semi-structured interviews and two panel discussions. Social enterprises in Austria are characterized through social activities, organizational types, legal forms, the society sector, the outcome…

Improvising on Emotion Terms: Students’ Strategies, Emotional Communication, and Aesthetic Value

2021

Studies in musical improvisation show that musicians and even children are able to communicate intended emotions to listeners at will. To understand emotional expressivity in music as an art form, communicative success needs to be related to improvisers’ thought processes and listeners’ aesthetic judgments. In the present study, we used retrospective verbal protocols to address college music students’ strategies in improvisations based on emotion terms. We also subjected their improvisations to expert ratings in terms of heard emotional content and aesthetic value. A qualitative analysis showed that improvisers used both generative strategies (expressible in intramusical terms) and imagina…

Israeli Crowdfunding: A Reflection of Its Entrepreneurial Culture

2020

AbstractCrowdfunding has its roots deep in the Israeli entrepreneurship ecosystem. Its characterizing elements of—collective individualism combined with flat social hierarchies, low degree of separation, mandatory army service that enforces innovative thinking and improvisation, Chutzpah, and finally high tolerance for failure, all provide fertile ground for entrepreneurship and facilitate innovative approaches to entrepreneurship funding such as crowdfunding. In light of this, the growth of crowdfunding in Israel is not surprising. While the equity crowdfunding leads the field, rewards and donations platforms are more known and popular, indeed the brand name of the senior rewards and donat…

Music teaching suggestions for working intercultural in secondary education: the pop music of miscegenation

2014
