A narratological approach to content selection in audio description: towards a strategy for the description of narratological time

2012

As more and more countries start to provide audio description services for a growing range of products and events, research into this new discipline is growing and diversifying as well. Two questions that seem to be at the heart of much of this research focus on what should be described and how this should be done, in other words on content selection and formulation of the description. The present article looks at the first of these two questions and approaches it from a narratological point of view. After a general discussion of the use of narratology for audio description, the focus will shift to one particular constituent of narrative, namely time. The different temporal aspects will be …

Managing a boreal forest landscape for providing timber, storing and sequestering carbon

2015

Human well-being highly depends on ecosystem services and this dependence is expected to increase in the future with increasing population and economic growth. Studies that investigate trade-offs between ecosystem services are urgently needed for informing policy-makers. We examine the trade-offs between a provisioning (revenues from timber selling) and regulating (carbon storage and sequestration) ecosystem services among seven alternative forest management regimes in a large boreal forest production landscape. First, we estimate the potential of the landscape to produce harvest revenues and store/sequester carbon across a 50-year time period. Then, we identify conflicts between harvest re…

A CAPWAP-Compliant Solution for Radio Resource Management in Large-Scale 802.11 WLAN

2007

Recently, the impressive success of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN technology has dramatically changed the role of the wireless connectivity provisioning. Born as a wireless extension of small office or home networks, todays the WLANs are getting more and more popular as a large, even metropolitan, area networks. The deployment of large-scale WLANs has some critical issues, because of the lack of coordinated management functionalities among the network nodes. In this paper we briefly describe the CAPWAP architectural solution, for centralizing some control and maintenance functionalities in large scale WLAN, by guaranteeing the interoperability between network nodes provided by different vendors. We …

The relationship between body and screen in Studio Azzurro’s performances since the 1980s until today

2018

Studio Azzurro is an Italian group that has been working with different performative languages since the 1980s: video installations, theater, video art, cinema, interactive installations, interactive museums. In all these artistic experiences Studio Azzurro has never worked using the languages handed down by tradition, but has always experimented by mixing them with new technologies. The work they have conducted in theater is particular, because the use of new technologies has transformed the concept of theater and has opened the way for the development of new performative forms such as digital or technological theater. In what follows, we will study the relationship between body and screen…

Territorial and socio-economic organisation in Le Grand-Pressigny

2012

In and around Le Grand-Pressigny (Indre-et-Loire, France), a petrographic study was implementedon 92 ceramic samples from the Final Neolithic sites of Le Petit-Paulmy and Bergeresse (Abilly).Analyses showed that the sediments used were extracted from local sources: Claise and Creusealluvium, local substrate and loessic silts. Quantitatively, the study showed that almost all the ceramicmaterials in Bergeresse and more than half of those in Le Petit-Paulmy come from the valley of theCreuse. The mineralogical compositions of three samples from Le Petit-Paulmy, including one ofunusual form, indicate sources from an exogenous region, the Massif Central (perhaps the alluviumof the Loire or the Al…
