Hematologic effects of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in patients with malignancy.

Abstract The effect of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) on hematologic parameters was evaluated in a phase I clinical study in 18 patients with advanced malignancy. G-CSF was administered once daily as a 30-minute infusion for 14 days; three patients each were treated at increasing dose levels of 1, 3, 10, 30, and 60 micrograms kg-1 day-1. A transient decrease in neutrophil and monocyte counts was observed immediately after the G-CSF infusion, followed by a dose-dependent increase of up to 15-fold. Betalain pigments are bioavailable phytochemicals recently acknowledged as natural radical scavengers. This work, which extends previous research on the postabsorbitive fate of dietary betalains, investigated the distribution of betanin and indicaxanthin in red blood cells (RBCs) isolated from healthy volunteers (n = 8), before and during the 1-8 h interval after a cactus pear fruit meal, and the potential antioxidative activity of the pigments in these cells. In the present study, we describe the changes of antioxidant enzyme activities and other oxidative stress-related parameters in a mediterranean cohort of women affected with epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC). For that purpose, the most representative enzymatic activities, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and the oxidized/reduced glutathione (GSSG/GSH) ratio have been analyzed in tumor tissue biopsies and compared with the normal tissue of the same patient. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment of human subjects (i.e. exposure to 100% oxygen at a pressure of 2.5 ATA for a total period of 3 x 20 min) caused clear and reproducible DNA damage in lymphocytes, as detected with the comet assay (single cell gel electrophoresis). Induction of DNA damage was found only after the first HBO exposure and not after further treatments of the same individuals. Furthermore, blood taken 24 h after HBO treatment was significantly protected against the induction of DNA damage by hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in vitro, indicating that adaptation occurred due to induction of antioxidant defenses. The measurement of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in addition to cerebral computerized tomography (CT) and angiography is most reliable in cases of transient ischemic attacks (TIA) and prolonged reversible ischemic neurologic deficits (PRIND). Alterations of CBF can be detected in symptom-free intervals. The cerebrovascular reactivity to CO2 stimulus is regarded as an especially suitable tool to prove the cerebrovascular reserve. 1. The effect of acetate absorbed from the gut on glucose turnover has been determined in four healthy subjects during both fasting and an intravenous glucose infusion by using [U-13C]glucose. 2. In the first part of the study, after an overnight fast, a tracer dose of [U-13C]glucose was infused at a constant rate along with an infusion of saline for 7 h. In the second part the saline infusion was replaced by glucose at 4.25 mg min−1 kg−1. : In this case report, we examine the behavior of plasma viscosity, explored at high and low shear rates, and erythrocyte aggregation in two patients with congenital afibrinogenemia, a clinical disorder firstly described in 1920 and that has an estimated incidence of 1 : 1-200 0000. The two hemorheological parameters examined by us showed a marked decrease in both patients, in one of whom erythrocyte aggregation was even undetectable. The purpose of our study was to retrospectively evaluate the sonographic, CT, and MRI findings (number, diameter, lobar location, depth from the hepatic capsule, and appearance of lesions) in a series of nine patients with pathologically proven solitary necrotic nodules of the liver and the natural evolution at follow-up in four of the nine patients.CONCLUSION. Deletions of loci on chromosomes 5q, 17p, 18q, and 22q, together with the incidence of p53 mutations and amplification of the double minute-2 gene were investigated in the sporadic colorectal tumors of 44 patients from a Spanish community. Chromosome deletions were analyzed by means of loss of heterozygosity analysis using a restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. Allelic losses were also detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-single-stranded conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis of a polymorphic site in intron 2 of the p53 gene. Introduction and Objectives. Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) following lung transplantation (LT) is associated with an activation of the inflammatory cascade and release of cytokines. Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) provides specific pulmonary vasodilatation and improves oxygenation.
