Magnetic Composite Thin Films of FexOy Nanoparticles and Photocrosslinked Dextran Hydrogels
2012
Abstract Magnetic hydrogel composites are promising candidates for a broad field of applications from medicine to mechanical engineering. Here, surface-attached composite films of magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) and a polymeric hydrogel (HG) were prepared from magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and a carboxymethylated dextran with photoreactive benzophenone substituents. A blend of the MNP and the dextran polymer was prepared by mixing in solution, and after spin-coating and drying the blend film was converted into a stable MNP–HG composite by photocrosslinking through irradiation with UV light. The bulk composite material shows strong mobility in a magnetic field, imparted by the MNPs. By util…
Iron oxide-based magnetic photocatalysts: Recent developments, challenges, and environmental applications
2021
Abstract Magnetic separation of the solid photocatalyst from the reacting suspension has received great interest in recent research because it offers a suitable way for removing and recycling the heterogeneous photocatalytic material particles preventing the agglomeration and sedimentation during and after their use. The use of iron oxides such as heterogeneous photocatalysts is an appropriate choice to obtain a suitable photocatalyst easily separable from the fluid. This chapter presents a detailed investigation of iron oxide-based magnetic photocatalysts (IOMPs). We will discuss the required conditions for the synthesis of these photocatalysts, followed by their applications for the remov…
Preparation and mechanical characterization of polycaprolactone/graphene oxide biocomposite nanofibers
2016
Biocomposite nanofiber scaffolds of polycaprolactone (PCL) filled with graphene oxide (GO) were prepared using electrospinning technology. Morphological and mechanical properties of the scaffolds were characterized in dry and wet environment. The results showed that the successful incorporation of GO nanosheets into PCL polymer nanofibers improved their mechanical properties. Furthermore it was demonstrated the higher performance achieved when GO is filled at low concentration in the nanofibers.
Correlations between Ion Conductivity and Polymer Dynamics in Hyperbranched Poly(ethylene oxide) Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion Batteries
2011
Poly(ethylene oxide)s with varying degrees of hyperbranching are effective at preventing the crystallization of PEO and lead to approximately a 100-fold increase in the Li-ion conductivity below 50 °C as compared with linear PEO. The Li-ion conductivities, which increase further upon permethylation of the hydroxyl termini, are found to correlate quantitatively with the fast segmental dynamics of PEO as measured by inelastic neutron scattering.
Segmental dynamics in polymer electrolytes
2002
Polymer dynamics in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)–salt mixtures is investigated by means of quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). In a previous study, we reported QENS data from the NEAT spectrometer (BENSC) that evidenced, for the first time, a dynamic heterogeneity in PEO–salt mixtures induced by salt addition. This finding is supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations carried out by Borodin et al. In agreement with MD simulations, our QENS data revealed two distinct processes: a fast motion corresponding to the bulk polymer and a slower relaxation, which we attribute to formation of PEO–cation complexes. In this paper we present new QENS data from the high-resolution spectrometer I…
Aggregation in aqueous media of tri-block copolymers tuned by the molecular selectivity of cyclodextrins
2009
The water + cyclodextrin + poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) mixtures have been investigated to explore the temperature effect on the aggregation of the copolymer in the presence of cyclodextrins (CDs). The CDs with different cavity sizes were chosen because they may include either the hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxides) block or both kinds of blocks. The differential scanning calorimetry and viscosity experiments straightforwardly evidenced that the critical micellar temperature is shifted to larger values by adding a CD which is able to include the middle poly(propylene oxide) block while it is not influenced by the presence of CD which is selective to the poly…

Reactive nanorods based on activated esterpolymers: a versatile template-assisted approach for the fabrication of functional nanorods
2011
A new route for the fabrication of polymeric nanorods with functional moieties via post-modification of reactive nanorods is described. To this end reactive nanorods with a homogenous and narrow size distribution were fabricated by utilizing an anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) template-assisted approach. The nanorods are based on activated pentafluorophenyl esters, to enable quantitative post-modification with amines under very mild reaction conditions yielding the corresponding functionalized amide. Post-modification with fluorescent dyes as well as the conversion into well-dispersed rod-shaped poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) hydrogels that exhibit a thermal-responsive phase transition wa…
Metal Oxide/Polymer Hybrid Nanoparticles with Versatile Functionality Prepared by Controlled Surface Crystallization
2012
Metal oxide/polymer hybrids are prepared from polystyrene nanoparticles functionalized at the surface with phosphonate and phosphate groups. The polymer particles are synthesized with specifically designed surface-active monomers (surfmers) and used as nucleation surfaces for the controlled in situ crystallization of cerium, iron, and zinc oxide nanocrystals. The formation of the metal oxide is driven by the addition of a base to suspensions of the polymer particles containing the corresponding precursor. The crystal formation at the particle surface is studied for the different hybrid systems by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The potential catalytic activity …
