Therapeutic modulation of lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2)

2011

Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is a calcium-independent phospholipase A2 that circulates in plasma in association with lipoprotein particles, whereas in atherosclerotic plaques it is co-localized with macrophages. Lp-PLA2 generates two proinflammatory mediators, lysophosphatidylcholine and oxidized nonesterified fatty acids, which play a role in the development of atherosclerotic lesions and formation of a necrotic core, leading to more vulnerable plaques. Epidemiologic studies demonstrate that increased circulating levels of Lp-PLA2 predict an increased risk of myocardial infarction, stroke and cardiovascular mortality. Furthermore, histologic examination of diseased hum…

Cerebral Oximetry Measurements Results Depending on a Preclinical Skull Phantom Model

2021

Abstract It is more common to perform non-invasive examination during general anaesthesia to ensure effective perioperative patient care. To achieve these results, researchers and clinicians are seeking out different technologies and developing new equipment. One such apparatus is a cerebral oximeter, which is used during cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass for neuroprotection management for reducing risk of postoperative neurological injury (cerebral stroke, neurocognitive dysfunction, and cerebral haemorrhage). A cerebral oximeter performs non-invasive transcutaneous measurements using near infrared radiation to assess the oxygenation of tissues. The objective of the study was to …

S-shaped decanuclear heterometallic [Ni8Ln2] complexes [Ln(iii) = Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho]: theoretical modeling of the magnetic properties of the gadolini…

2014

The reaction of 8-quinolinol-2-carboaldoxime (LH2) with Ni(II) and Ln(III) salts afforded the heterometallic decanuclear compounds [Ni8Dy2(μ3-OH)2(L)8(LH)2(H2O)6](ClO4)2·16H2O (1), [Ni8Gd2(μ3-OH)2(L)8(LH)2(H2O)4(MeOH)2](NO3)2·12H2O (2), [Ni8Ho2(μ3-OH)2(L)8(LH)2(H2O)4(MeOH)2](ClO4)2·2MeOH·12H2O (3) and [Ni8Tb2 (μ3-OH)2(L)8(LH)2(MeOH)4(OMe)2]·2CH2Cl2·8H2O (4). While compounds 1-3 are dicationic, compound 4 is neutral. These compounds possess an S-shaped architecture and comprise a long chain of metal ions bound to each other. In all the complexes, the eight Ni(II) and two Ln(III) ions of the multimetallic ensemble are hold together by two μ3-OH, eight dianionic (L(2-)) and two monoanionic oxi…

Mononuclear heterocyclic rearrangements—vi

1974

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the mononuclear heterocyclic rearrangements. The chapter discusses the ring conversion of type 1→2 characterized by nucleophilic attack from a Z atom on a sp 2 -nitrogen atom with displacement of an atom. On this basis, the known ring conversions are tabulated. Taking into account the reactivities observed in the rearrangements, results are presented for 1,2,4-oxadiazole, isoxazole, and 1,2,5-oxadiazole. The sequence involving an oxime group in the side chain is discussed. The chapter presents several attempts for inducing rearrangements in which the reaction center of the starting ring is an atom other than nitrogen. Rearrangement of arylhydrazones …

Recommended practice for out-of-hospital emergency anaesthesia in adults: Statement from the Out-of-Hospital Emergency Anaesthesia Working Group of t…

2016

Emergency anaesthesia is an important therapeutic measure in out-of-hospital emergency medicine. The associated risks are considerably higher than those of in-hospital anaesthesia. The primary objectives of emergency anaesthesia are hypnosis, analgesia, oxygenation and ventilation through airway management. The secondary objectives of emergency anaesthesia are amnesia, anxiolysis, the reduction of oxygen consumption and respiratory work, the protection of vital organs and the avoidance of secondary myocardial and cerebral damage. A critical evaluation of the indications for outof- hospital emergency anaesthesia must take into consideration patient, case and provider-related factors. Rapid s…

Biophotonics in veterinary medicine: the first steps toward clinical translation

2019

In this paper, we analyzed the current situation and the potential of biophotonics and biomedical optics in veterinary medicine. Promising optical techniques such as optical coherence tomography, pulse oximeter, and hyperspectral imaging have been clinically translated into human medicine. But even though human and small animal medicine share personalized and state-of-the-art approach, biophotonics remains rarely exploited in the canine and feline medicine. However, there are some biophotonics studies in veterinary oncology which addressed tumor diagnosis (skin and subcutaneous tumors), prognosis (lymphoma), and therapy (clear surgical margins). Visible and near-infrared spectroscopy served…
