An acute exposure to ozone impairs human olfactory functioning

Ozone is a ubiquitous and irritant gas. We questioned whether an acute exposure to 0.2 ppm ozone impaired olfactory functioning.Healthy, normosmic subjects were exposed according to a parallel group design either to 0.2 ppm ozone (n = 15) or to sham (n = 13) in an exposure chamber for two hours. Possible irritating effects were assessed by questionnaire (range 0-5). The detection threshold of n-butanol was measured with the Sniffin' Sticks test before and after exposure. Short term associations of ambient nitrogen dioxide with daily total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality: multilocation analysis in 398 cities

Objective To evaluate the short term associations between nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and total, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality across multiple countries/regions worldwide, using a uniform analytical protocol. Design Two stage, time series approach, with overdispersed generalised linear models and multilevel meta-analysis. Setting 398 cities in 22 low to high income countries/regions. Differences in ozone sensitivity in three varieties of cabbage (Brassica oleracea L.) in the rural Mediterranean area

Summary The effects of air quality with three levels of ozone (O 3 ) were studied on three cabbage varieties during a one month exposure period in the Valencia area by means of modulated chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, lipid peroxidation and solute leakage. Increasing O 3 exposure reduced the maximum quantum yield of PSII photochemistry (F v /F m ) in line with a reduction in non-cyclic electron flow (ϕ PSII ), lower capacity to reduce the quinone pool (q P ) and a decrease in the potential phothosynthetic quantum conversion, Rfd ratio. All-organic device with integrated chemical filter dedicated to the selective measurement of NO2 in air

Abstract An original organic semiconductor gas sensor devoted to the selective monitoring of nitrogen dioxide in air has been successfully developed. This device combines the great sensitivity and the partial selectivity toward oxidizing gases of a molecular organic semiconductor, copper phthalocyanine, with the O3 filtering selectivity of an organic material, indigo. Experimental measurements highlight filtering yield of indigo close to 100% toward O3 and lower than 10% for NO2.
