Depth Enhancement by Fusion for Passive and Active Sensing

2012

This paper presents a general refinement procedure that enhances any given depth map obtained by passive or active sensing. Given a depth map, either estimated by triangulation methods or directly provided by the sensing system, and its corresponding 2-D image, we correct the depth values by separately treating regions with undesired effects such as empty holes, texture copying or edge blurring due to homogeneous regions, occlusions, and shadowing. In this work, we use recent depth enhancement filters intended for Time-of-Flight cameras, and adapt them to alternative depth sensing modalities, both active using an RGB-D camera and passive using a dense stereo camera. To that end, we propose …

Ruolo delle piante officinali nella salvaguardia della biodiversità negli ambienti mediterranei

2008

Mediterranean Italian lands have a considerable plant biodiversity, and Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) play a significant role inside it. Some preliminary trials carried out by the DAAT (Dipartimento di Agronomia Ambientale e Territoriale – Department for Land and Environmental Agronomy) of the University of Palermo had the goal to evaluate the suitability of three native species (Hyssop, St. John’s Wort, Lavender) with an herbal interest to the field cropping conditions. The research activity has been carried out in the experimental farm “Sparacia” (Cammarata - AG – Sicily, 37° 38' N - 13° 46' E; 415 m a.s.l.) from 2006 to 2007. The trials confirmed the good suitability of the tested…

Differential influence of Pomphorhynchus laevis (Acanthocephala) on brain serotonergic activity in two congeneric host species.

2007

The physiological mechanisms by which parasites with complex life cycles manipulate the behaviour of their intermediate hosts are still poorly understood. In Burgundy, eastern France, the acanthocephalan parasitePomphorhynchus laevisinverses reaction to light in its amphipod hostGammarus pulex, but not inGammarus roeseli, a recent invasive species. Here, we show that this difference in manipulation actually reflects a difference in the ability of the parasite to alter brain serotonergic (5-HT) activity of the two host species. Injection of 5-HT in uninfected individuals of both host species was sufficient to inverse reaction to light. However, a difference in brain 5-HT immunocytochemical s…

Das erste zoologische Kompendium in der Zeit der Renaissance: Edward Wottons Schrift „Über die Differenzen der Tiere”

1990

The English physian Edward Wotton wrote the first zoological compendium in the time of the Renaissance. As a convinced representative of Renaissance-Humanism Wotton strictly applied Aristotelian methodological principles to Aristotelian facts. In this way he tried to make Classical Antiquity complete; the Renaissance of ancient zoology is here tantamount to a new beginning. Wotton's achievement is in the first place to have provided a good summary of the whole of ancient zoological knowledge to which he added a few observations of his own. He carried through the Aristotelian concept of differentiation by many distinguishing features more strictly than Aristotle himself and all subsequent au…

An innovative lipid-lowering approach to enhance attainment of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol goals

2020

Aims To improve attainment of LDL-cholesterol (LDL-c) targets, an expert group proposed an algorithm for lipid-lowering therapy during hospitalization for acute coronary syndrome and during follow-up. We aimed to assess adherence to this algorithm, and evaluate its impact on LDL-c levels and on attainment of therapeutic LDL-c targets in a population of post-acute coronary syndrome patients. Methods and results Prospective, observational study including patients admitted for acute coronary syndrome between February 2017 and September 2018. Patients admitted without statins or ezetimibe were considered ‘naïve’. Baseline LDL-c was admission LDL-c in naïve patients, and for those taking lipid-…

Characteristics of patients with an unplanned admission to an acute palliative care unit

2016

The aim of this cohort study is to compare the symptom burden of patients who have an unplanned admission to an acute palliative care unit (APCU) with patients who have a regular planned admission. A consecutive sample of advanced cancer patients who were admitted to an APCU was prospectively assessed. The reasons and the kind of admission were recorded (unplanned, UP, or planned, P). Anticancer treatments, whether patients were on/off treatment or uncertain, previous care setting, and who referred the patient to the unit were also recorded. The Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) was used at admission and at time of discharge, as well as the Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale. Analges…

The effectiveness of several market integration measures when facing a market turmoil

2003

Many market integration measures are operationalized to compute their numerical values during a period characterized by the lack of stability and market turmoil. The results of the tests give their degree of effectiveness, and reveal that the measures based on the principles of asset valuation, versus statistical measures, more clearly yield the level of integration of financial markets. Besides, cross market arbitrage-linked measures and equilibrium models-linked measures provide complementary information and reflect different properties, and consequently, both types of measures may be useful in practice.

Explicit equations for uniform flow depth

2017

Conventional approach in uniform open channel flow is to express the resistance coefficient in the Manning, Darcy-Weisbach or Chezy form. However, for practical cross-sections, including rectangular and trapezoidal ones, the governing equation is implicit in the uniform water depth. For these sections the water depth, corresponding to known values of the flow discharge, slope channel and resistance coefficient, is presently obtained by trial and error procedure. In this paper exact analytical solutions of uniform flow depth for rectangular and trapezoidal section have been obtained in the form of fast converging power series.
