Prefazione
2018
The brief considerations that precede the chapters of the volume illustrate the reasons that have pushed the editor to take in examination, with other researchers, the institutes of the legal ability, of the ability to act (as well as of protection of the incapable one), and of the mental capacity.
The essay introduces the following chapters, concerning the ability to act, illustrating some problems that still arouse to the interpreter the institutes of protection of the incapable one to act, in the perspective of an afterthought of the distinctions, operated by the prevailing doctrin…
Interpretation of the RAS method : absorption and fabrication effects are incorrect.
1999
The r and s vectors of the RAS method of updating matrices are presented often as corresponding to an absorption effect and a fabrication effect. Here, it is proved that these vectors are unidentified, so their interpretation in terms of fabrication and absorption effect is incorrect..
The WEBT BL Lacertae Campaign 2001 and its extension : Optical light curves and colour analysis 1994–2002
2004
BL Lacertae has been the target of four observing campaigns by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) collaboration. In this paper we present UBVRI light curves obtained by theWEBT from 1994 to 2002, including the last, extended BL Lac 2001 campaign. A total of about 7500 optical observations performed by 31 telescopes from Japan to Mexico have been collected, to be added to the ∼15 600 observations of the BL Lac Campaign 2000. All these data allow one to follow the source optical emission behaviour with unprecedented detail. The analysis of the colour indices reveals that the flux variability can be interpreted in terms of two components: longer-term variations occurring on a fewday time …
Negative Relationships in the Workplace
2019
A workplace is a network of various relationships, each with their own distinctive features. Negative coworker relationships, such as bullying relationships, may cause significant long-term emotional and psychophysical strain for the individuals involved, the coworkers who observe such relationships, and the entire organization. In contrast to an isolated workplace conflict, a negative relationship can include recurring patterns of dismissive and offensive communication or the perceived threat of such. This chapter explores nonvoluntary relationships that the participants are, to a certain extent, forced to maintain due to their shared office space and organizational goals. Because ending t…

The People’s Assembly: Testing the Collaborative (e)-Democracy
2020
This paper aims to critically analyse the Estonian People’s Assembly (EPA), a crowdsourcing initiative carried out from 2013 to 2014. During the project, citizens could participate in decision-making and make proposals for laws and policies on a dedicated web-platform. Additionally, some people were invited for a traditional off-line debate. In that way, the project combined virtual communication tools with traditional discussion to apply the principles of collaborative e-democracy, in which governmental stakeholders and non-governmental stakeholders (such as local communities) join in a deliberative debate. The purpose of this paper is to observe, both, gains and problems of this crowdsour…
Hidden attractors in Chua circuit: mathematical theory meets physical experiments
2022
AbstractAfter the discovery in early 1960s by E. Lorenz and Y. Ueda of the first example of a chaotic attractor in numerical simulation of a real physical process, a new scientific direction of analysis of chaotic behavior in dynamical systems arose. Despite the key role of this first discovery, later on a number of works have appeared supposing that chaotic attractors of the considered dynamical models are rather artificial, computer-induced objects, i.e., they are generated not due to the physical nature of the process, but only by errors arising from the application of approximate numerical methods and finite-precision computations. Further justification for the possibility of a real exi…
Environmental citizenship in geography and beyond
2020
The need for wider action against environmental problems such as climate change has brought the debate about the role of citizen to the political, practical, and scientific domains. Environmental citizenship provides a useful tool to conceptualize the relation between citizenship and the environment. However, there exists considerable variation in the ways environmental citizenship is understood regarding both the aspect of citizenship and the relationship to the environment. In this article, we review the literature on environmental citizenship and investigate the evolution of the concept. The article is based on a literature search with an emphasis on geographical research. The concept of…
Chasing writers’ ghosts through a modern city : Augmenting urban space with literary connections during the Tove Jansson walk in Helsinki
2019
The article employs the theme of a literary walk (Watson 2009), a practice of encountering places with literary associations on foot. Urban areas present especially suitable settings for such themed walks, as cities can have multiple literary connections, and literary places are located within a short distance from one another. In this paper, I focus on the sites associated with Tove Jansson (1914– 2001), a Finnish-Swedish artist and writer, internationally known for her books about the Moomins. The study utilises an autoethnographic approach and draws on observations at the sites with connections to Jansson in Helsinki, organised spatially into a walk around the city. I analyse how urban s…
