Perspective on Curved Surfaces in the Age of Pozzo: The Nuova Pratica di Prospettiva of Paolo Amato

The study focuses an almost unknown treatise on perspective, The Nuova Pratica di Prospettiva, written by the priest Paolo Amato (1634–1714) in the last years of his life and published posthumously in 1733. The main points of interest of the Nuova Pratica is the perspective projection on cylindrical surfaces, which exceeds the coeval ‘practical’ treatises on perspective. A detailed resume of Amato’s treatise is accompanied by geometric schemes illustrating the perspective method proposed by the author. 3D Architecture and Plio-Quaternary evolution of the Paola Basin: New insights to the Forearc of the Tyrrhenian-Ionian Subduction System

The 3D stratigraphic architecture and the Pliocene to Quaternary evolution of the Paola Basin (offshore western Calabria), a segment in the fore-arc of the Tyrrhenian-Ionian subduction system, are reconstructed by using a grid of unpublished of multi-channels, high-penetration, seismic-reflection profiles acquired in the frame of the project SINBUS, integrated by bathymetric data from EMODnet-Bathymetry portal. The Paola Basin is a NNW-SSE elongated, ~ 60 km long and ~20 km wide, slightly asymmetric syncline, which hosted Plio-Quaternary deposits up to 5.5 km thick in its depocenter. Il contributo analizza l'intera vicenda professionale di uno dei protagonisti dell'architettura del "barocco" siciliano: Paolo Amato. In particolare il testo approfondisce alcuni significative tappe della carrierai dell'architetto: La formazione e gli esordi; la chiesa del SS. Salvatore; l'altare della Madonna Libera Inferni: le decorazioni delle chiese di Santa Maria in Valverde e di Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio; la cappella del Crocifisso nel duomo di Monreale; l'ultimo quindicennio di attività e l'ambiente palermitano.

Il contributo fa un bilancio sulla percezione storiografica della figura dell'architetto Paolo Amato (Nobile) e sull'attività dello stesso nell'ambito dell'incisione, dell'architettura effimera, cercando di ricostituirne, almeno in parte, la biblioteca privata attraverso l'individuazione degli ex libris segnati nei frontespizi dei volumi oggi custoditi presso la Biblioteca Comunale di Palermo, la Biblioteca Centrale della Regione Siciliana, gli archivi privati (Sutera).

Il viaggio di Lopichis (Paolo Diacono, HL IV 37): discesa agli inferi e ascesa alla salvezza

This paper explores the tale – which is also a saga – of the escape of Lopichis, a Langobard, from the Avaro-Slavic captivity in the first half of the 7th century, described by Paul the Deacon in his Historia Langobardorum (book IV, chapter 37). Lopichis was the great-grandfather of Paul the Deacon. The analysis focuses on the episodes of the encounter with a wolf who tooks the leadership until Lopichis decided to shoot him with a bow; and the encounter with an old Slavic woman who saves the young man from the death. The tale written by Paul the Deacon is formed by two opposite sections: the first figures as a descensus ad inferos, the second as ascensio to the salvation.

L’architetto Paolo Labisi , uno dei principali protagonisti della ricostruzione settecentesca in Val di Noto, si differenza dalle coeve figure di spicco (spesso di formazione cantieristica o di bottega) per lo svolgimento di una comprovata attività di teorico e di disegnatore che si racconta in una serie di manoscritti e tavole progettuali, da lui realizzati e oggi custoditi presso la Biblioteca Comunale di Noto.
