Waiting for a new leader: Eras and transitions in Cosa Nostra

2019

Determinants of vaccine hesitancy and effectiveness of vaccination counseling interventions among a sample of the general population in Palermo, Ital…

2020

Counteract vaccine hesitancy is a public health priority. Main objectives of the cross-sectional study conducted were to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding vaccination issues, to estimate the prevalence of vaccine hesitancy and to estimate the effectiveness of vaccination counseling on community advocacy in a sample of general population. An anonymous validated questionnaire was administered in April 2017 at the main shopping center of Palermo and was followed by tailored vaccination counseling interventions. To estimate the effectiveness of the interventions four main connection parameters to the vaccinarsi.org website were evaluated, in the two months before and after …

Solving the Surveillance Problem

2017

This chapter examines the way surveillance is discussed in the leading Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat after the revelations made by former NSA-contractor Edward Snowden. In 2013, Snowden provided journalists with documents that revealed the unexpected extent of surveillance conducted by security agencies such as the NSA. Drawing on Critical Discourse Studies and a Foucauldian view of discourse, this article understands media discussions following the Snowden revelations as discursive struggles where the legitimacy and future of surveillance are being constructed and debated. The article examines the ways the media formulates solutions to the problems posed by surveillance, and explores…

Population response during an Oceanic Anoxic Event: The case of Posidonotis (Bivalvia) from the Lower Jurassic of the Neuquén Basin, Argentina

2019

Benthonic marine species show a wide range of biological reactions to seawater chemical changes through time, from subtle adjustments to extinction. The Early Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event (T-OAE) was recently recognized in the Neuquén Basin, Argentina, confirming its global scope. The event was identified chemostratigraphically on the basis of a relative increase in marine organic carbon and a characteristic negative carbon-isotope excursion (δ13Corg) in bulk rock and fossil wood in the upper Pliensbachian–lower Toarcian interval in the Arroyo Lapa section (Neuquén). Simultaneously with collection of lithological samples, a high-resolution biostratigraphical survey was carried out, and the…

Dynamic architecture and regulatory implications of the miRNA network underlying the response to stress in melon

2019

miRNAs are small RNAs that regulate mRNAs at both transcriptional and posttranscriptional level. In plants, miRNAs are involved in the regulation of different processes including development and stress-response. Elucidating how stress-responsive miRNAs are regulated is key to understand the global response to stress but also to develop efficient biotechnological tools that could help to cope with stress. Here, we describe a computational approach based on sRNA sequencing, transcript quantification and degradome data to analyse the accumulation, function and structural organization of melon miRNAs reactivated under seven biotic and abiotic stress conditions at two and four days post-treatmen…

Knowledge, attitudes and practices towards COVID-19 among nursing students of the University of Palermo: results from an online survey.

2020

Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practices towards Sars-CoV-2 among nursing students of University of Palermo during the rapid rise period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: This is cross-sectional study. A survey was provided to all nursing students and consisted of two parts: demographics and Knowledge, Attitude and Practices (KAP) survey. A multivariate linear regression model was used and adjusted Odds Ratios (aOR) are presented. Results: 575 students were interviewed and their mean age was 22.3. The overall score indicates good knowledge (p=0.046) and good practices among the four courses of study (p=0.038). Multivariate linea…

Pap Testing in a High-Income Country with Suboptimal Compliance Levels: A Survey on Acceptance Factors among Sicilian Women

2018

Cervical cancer screening is uncommon, especially in low-income countries and among lower socioeconomic status people in high-income countries. The aims of this study were to examine the adherence of Sicilian women to Pap testing and to identify the determinants of this in a population with a secondary prevention attitude lower than high-income countries and the national average. A cross-sectional study called &ldquo

Dimethyl 4,4'-(diazenedi-yl)dibenzoate at 100 K.

2013

In the asymmetric part of the unit cell of the title compound, C16H14N2O4, there are two chemically equivalent but crystallographic independent half molecules. The geometric centre of each complete molecule lies on a crystallographic inversion centre. Both molecules are almost planar [mean deviations of atoms in the two molecules are 0.032 (2) and 0.044 (2) Å] and their geometries are similar. In the crystal, molecules are arranged in columns along theaaxis. There are no intermolecular donor–acceptor distances shorter than 3.4 Å.

1,1′-[2,3,5,6-Tetramethyl-p-phenylenebis(methyleneoxy)]di-1H-benzotriazole

2009

The complete molecule of the title compound, C(24)H(24)N(6)O(2), is generated by a crystallographic inversion centre. The benzotriazole rings form dihedral angles of 2.10 (7)° with the central aromatic ring. The crystal packing is consolidated by π-π inter-actions, with centroid-centroid distances of 3.6234 (10) Å, together with weak C-H⋯π inter-actions.

Bis[3-methyl-5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-4-yl] selenide methanol hemisolvate

2014

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C18H16N6Se·0.5CH3OH, contains two independent molecules of bis[3-methyl-5-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-4-yl] selenide with similar C—Se—C bond angles [99.30 (14) and 98.26 (13)°], and a methanol molecule of solvation. In one molecule, the dihedral angles between pyrazole and neighbouring pyridine rings are 18.3 (2) and 15.8 (2)°, and the corresponding angles in the other molecule are 13.5 (2) and 8.3 (2)°. In the crystal, the selenide and solvent molecules are linked by classical O—H...N and N—H...N hydrogen bonds, as well as by weak C—H...O and C—H...π interactions, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture.
