The value of total thyroidectomy as the definitive treatment for Graves’ disease: A single centre experience of 594 cases
2019
Highlights • Total thyroidectomy is a safe and effective treatment for Graves’ disease. • It is associated with a very low incidence rate of post-operative complications. • Total thyroidectomy offers a rapid and definitive control of hyperthyroidism and its related symptoms.
Recommendations for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C in special population groups (migrants, intravenous drug us…
2011
Abstract The global spread of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV), their high chronicity rates and their progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, are major public health problems. Research and intervention programmes for special population groups are needed in order to assess their infection risk and set up suitable prevention and control strategies. Aim of this paper is to give health care professionals information on HBV and HCV infections amongst migrants, drug users and prison inmates. The manuscript is an official Position Paper on behalf of the following Scientific Societies: Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (A.I.S.F.), Italian Society of In…
Ethical issues: invasive ventilation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
2012
The first man was a school headmaster. By his eye-gaze system he is able to order coins to enlarge his 10-year collection. His grandchildren extort presents from him in exchange for help. The second was a prefect and even now insists that the flowers in the garden represent the national flag. In spite of his gastrostomy, he still likes to sip his espresso from porcelain cups. The ventilation circuit 24/7 has not changed his custom to read the newspapers and listen to classical music in the living room. That girl is a young mum. She is fed by a tube, but she always makes her little child laugh with the dialectal phrases that she writes on the screen. The surgeon, every day in his electric wh…
CA125 but not NT-proBNP predicts the presence of a congestive intrarenal venous flow in patients with acute heart failure
2021
Abstract Background Intrarenal venous flow (IRVF) measured by Doppler ultrasound has gained interest as a potential surrogate marker of renal congestion and adverse outcomes in heart failure. In this work, we aimed to determine if antigen carbohydrate 125 (CA125) and plasma amino-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) are associated with congestive IRVF patterns (i.e., biphasic and monophasic) in acute heart failure (AHF). Methods and results We prospectively enrolled a consecutive cohort of 70 patients hospitalized for AHF. Renal Doppler ultrasound was assessed within the first 24-h of hospital admission. The mean age of the sample was 73.5 ± 12.3 years; 47.1% were female, and…
Commissioning and quality assurance procedures for the HDR Valencia skin applicators
2016
The Valencia applicators (Nucletron, an Elekta company, Elekta AB, Stockholm, Sweden) are cup-shaped tungsten applicators with a flattening filter used to collimate the radiation produced by a high-dose-rate (HDR) 192 Ir source, and provide a homogeneous absorbed dose at a given depth. This beam quality provides a good option for the treatment of skin lesions at shallow depth (3-4 mm). The user must perform commissioning and periodic testing of these applicators to guarantee the proper and safe delivery of the intended absorbed dose, as recommended in the standards in radiation oncology. In this study, based on AAPM and GEC-ESTRO guidelines for brachytherapy units and our experience, a set …
Patient- and lesion-tailored algorithm of endovascular treatment for arterial occlusive disease of extracranial arteries supplying the brain: safety …
2017
Introduction: Although surgical endarterectomy remains the treatment of choice for carotid artery stenosis, stenting plays an important role as an alternative treatment modality, especially in high-risk patients. The actual safety profile associated with stenting procedures is probably better than that reported by randomized controlled trials. Aim : To assess the safety of stent implantations in extracranial arteries supplying the brain, and also to identify risk factors associated with this procedure. Material and methods: This was a post hoc analysis, with 30-day follow-up. We analyzed the results of treatment of 372 patients who underwent 408 procedures, 197 such procedures in asymptomat…
Treatment of high- and intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism using the AngioJet percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy system in patients with contraind…
2018
Introduction Intravenous thrombolysis is the treatment of choice in patients presenting with high- and intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism. The role of percutaneous mechanical pulmonary thrombectomy (PMPT) is not fully established, although selected patients can be managed with this method. Aim This open-label single-centre prospective pilot study was aimed at assessing the feasibility of PMPT for the treatment of severe pulmonary embolism in a Polish hospital. We also evaluated the safety and efficacy of such management. Material and methods We managed 7 patients, aged 52.7 ±16.6 years, presenting with high- and intermediate-risk pulmonary embolism (4 patients with class 5 and one patient…
Emotional tone, analytical thinking, and somatosensory processes of a sample of Italian Tweets during the first phases of the COVID-19 pandemic : obs…
2021
Background The COVID-19 pandemic is a traumatic individual and collective chronic experience, with tremendous consequences on mental and psychological health that can also be reflected in people’s use of words. Psycholinguistic analysis of tweets from Twitter allows obtaining information about people’s emotional expression, analytical thinking, and somatosensory processes, which are particularly important in traumatic events contexts. Objective We aimed to analyze the influence of official Italian COVID-19 daily data (new cases, deaths, and hospital discharges) and the phase of managing the pandemic on how people expressed emotions and their analytical thinking and somatosensory processes …
Acute Effect of Alcohol Intake on Cardiovascular Autonomic Regulation During the First Hours of Sleep in a Large Real-World Sample of Finnish Employe…
2018
Background Sleep is fundamental for good health, and poor sleep has been associated with negative health outcomes. Alcohol consumption is a universal health behavior associated with poor sleep. In controlled laboratory studies, alcohol intake has been shown to alter physiology and disturb sleep homeostasis and architecture. The association between acute alcohol intake and physiological changes has not yet been studied in noncontrolled real-world settings. Objective The aim of this study was to assess the effects of alcohol intake on the autonomic nervous system (ANS) during sleep in a large noncontrolled sample of Finnish employees. Methods From a larger cohort, this study included 4098 su…
Ultra-low contrast coronary angiography and zero-contrast percutaneous coronary intervention for prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy: step-by-…
2019
Contrast-induced nephropathy is a serious complication after intravascular administration of iodinated contrast media and is associated with numerous adverse outcomes. Its prevalence is particularly high in patients with multiple comorbidities who undergo coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Currently, the only effective method to prevent contrast-induced kidney injury is adequate hydration and a reduction of contrast volume during the intervention. Recently, new approaches aiming to minimize contrast usage have been proposed, i.e., ultra-low contrast angiography and zero-contrast PCI. However, neither tutorials for these techniques nor reviews of their outcome…
