Zero-contrast percutaneous coronary interventions to preserve kidney function in patients with severe renal impairment and hemodialysis subjects

2019

Introduction Zero-contrast percutaneous coronary intervention (zero-PCI) is a new method for prevention of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, evidence for its feasibility, safety and clinical utility is limited to reports of single cases or series of patients. Aim To present outcomes of zero-PCI in patients with severe CKD, including hemodialysis subjects, who were treated with this procedure in order to preserve their renal function. Material and methods Twenty-nine zero-PCIs were performed, mostly as a staged procedure, in 20 patients with advanced CKD. In this group, 4 patients were treated with hemodialysis but presented pr…

Feasibility of a personal health technology-based psychological intervention for men with stress and mood problems: Randomized controlled pilot trial

2013

BackgroundWork-related stress is a significant problem for both people and organizations. It may lead to mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression, resulting in increased work absences and disabilities. Scalable interventions to prevent and manage harmful stress can be delivered with the help of technology tools to support self-observations and skills training. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of the P4Well intervention in treatment of stress-related psychological problems. P4Well is a novel intervention which combines modern psychotherapy (the cognitive behavioral therapy and the acceptance and commitment therapy) with personal health technologies to deliv…

Characterization of the synthetic cannabinoid MDMB-CHMCZCA

2016

The synthetic cannabinoid MDMB-CHMCZCA was characterized by various spectroscopic techniques including NMR spectroscopy and tandem mass spectrometry. The synthetic sample was found to be of S-configuration by VCD spectroscopy and comparison of the data with DFT calculations, while ECD spectroscopy was found to be inconclusive in this case. The enantiomeric purity of samples from test purchases and police seizures was assessed by a self-developed chiral HPLC method.

An Iranian booklet: non destructive examination by Energy Dispersive X-Ray Diffractometry and Micro-Raman Spectroscopy

2009

Energy Dispersive X-Ray Diffractometry was used in combination with micro-Raman Spectroscopy to study an undated illuminated Iranian booklet. In both cases, no preliminary preparation of the samples was needed: the data were acquired in a non-destructive way in a natural environment. The book is of particular interest because of the unusual presence of miniatures on some pages. The two techniques were used to collect data from small areas of the pages and in different regions of the miniature in order to identify inks and pigments and to attempt chronological assignment. Raman spectra were affected by strong background fluorescence. In spite of this, different peaks were detected and identi…

The vesicular transfer of CLIC1 from glioblastoma to microvascular endothelial cells requires TRPM7.

2018

Chloride intracellular channel 1 (CLIC1) is highly expressed and secreted by human glioblastoma cells and cell lines such as U87, initiating cell migration and tumor growth. Here, we examined whether CLIC1 could be transferred to human primary microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC). We previously reported that the oncogenic microRNA, miR-5096, increased the release of extracellular vesicles (EVs) by which it increased its own transfer from U87 to surrounding cells. Thus, we also examined its effect on the CLIC1 transfer. In homotypic cultures, miR-5096 did not increase the expression of CLIC1 in U87 nor in HMEC. However, the endothelial CLIC1 level increased after exposure to EVs released b…

Predicting stiffness and strength of birch pulp:Polylactic acid composites

2016

This paper studies failure of birch pulp–polylactic acid composites. Stiffness and strength are calculated using the theory of short fibre composites and the results are compared to experimental data. The results differed from the experimental values by 0–6%. With less aligned fibres the short fibre theory is not feasible. The performance of the 40 wt% birch pulp – polylactic acid composite is predicted with X-ray microtomography based finite element modelling, and the results are compared with experiments. Stiffness results differed from experiments by 1–17% . By adding into the models a third material phase representing the interface between the fibres and the matrix, the stress–strain c…

Chemical-Based Methodologies to Extend the Shelf Life of Fresh Fish—A Review

2021

Due to its characteristics, fresh fish is a highly perishable food with a very short shelf-life under refrigeration. Several methods have been introduced to slow down its deterioration, such as by means of oxygen depletion of the food package (vacuum packaging), or by changing the natural atmosphere that is in contact with the fresh fish (modified atmosphere packaging), or by the use of chemicals generally recognized as safe: such compounds can be directly applied (by dipping or spraying) or incorporated into packaging materials and slowly migrate to the product, exerting a hurdle effect against microbial development and lipid oxidation (active packaging). This review aims to cover the most…

Monitoring Biological Damage on Paper-based Documents in the Historical Archive of the Palermo Astronomical Observatory

2017

Libraries and archives house a wide variety of documents made of materials of vegetal and animal origin: unbound papers and books, manuscripts and printed books, photographs (negative and positive), prints, maps, available to the public for reading needs, study and information. These materials are often subject to fluctuations in environmental and micro-environmental parameters. For this reason, it is essential to implement constant monitoring and control of environmental conditions and potential deteriogens in order to slow down deterioration processes. The monitoring of the microbial degradation of paper documents in the Historical Archives of Palermo Astronomical Observatory has revealed…
