A low-pass velocity filter for ultracold neutrons

Abstract We have built a device to filter ultracold neutrons with axial velocities v n ≤ 8.0 m / s from faster neutrons. The apparatus has been successfully tested at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble and is used in specific experiments, e.g., the measurement of ultracold neutron transmission through various types of neutron guides.
Forest management is associated with physiological stress in an old–growth forest passerine

We investigated how physiological stress in an area-sensitive old-growth forest passerine, the Eurasian treecreeper (Certhia familiaris), is associated with forest fragmentation and forest structure. We found evidence that the concentrations of plasma corticosterone in chicks were higher under poor food supply in dense, young forests than in sparse, old forests. In addition, nestlings in large forest patches had lower corticosterone levels and a better body condition than in small forest patches. In general, corticosterone levels were negatively related to body condition and survival. We also found a decrease in corticosterone levels within the breeding season, which may have been a result …

This qualitative research study depicts the main categories obtained by means of an inductive methodology based on the content analysis of 8 interviews using the N’Vivo program. The sample consisted of 8 men (between 26 and 45 years) who had passed a competitive examination. We take into consideration whether this life event and its related transition is an example of a contemporary rite of passage. We focus on changes reported by the subjects once the developmental transition was over. These changes are related to new social identities. The most relevant psychological and structural processes in order to get this kind of optimal changes are also discussed.
A Control Algorithm for Active/Passive Hydraulic Winches Used in Active Heave Compensation

Abstract The most common active heave compensated offshore cranes have hydraulic winch systems. This paper investigates an active/passive hydraulic winch system with variable-displacement motors and variable-displacement pumps. The paper addresses the challenges when the active motors are set with a low displacement. The active motor displacement is shown to have significant impact on the dynamics of the closed loop hydraulic system. The classical control strategy for this type of system do not address these challenges and will in certain situations have significantly reduced performance. Abstract The system studied is a plane channel in which one of the two vertical walls is kept at an arbitrary temperature profile and may be partially or completely wet by a falling liquid film, while the opposite wall is adiabatic. Air from the environment flows along the channel with a mass flow rate which depends on the balance between hydraulic resistances and buoyancy forces. These latter, in their turn, depend on the distribution of temperature and humidity (hence, density) along the channel and eventually on the heat and mass transferred from wall and film to the humid air. A pre- and post-treatment assessment was performed, consisting of the Brief Resilient Coping Scale (BRCS), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS), and Coping Strategies Questionnaire. Accurate tuning of mismatched twin-core fiber filters

We have demonstrated a reproducible and accurate way of tuning the coupling wavelength of a mismatched twin-core filter. This method allows high quality all-fiber filters to be implemented with low loss at any desired wavelength over a range of few hundred nanometers from the same fiber. An ~500-nm tuning range is demonstrated, limited only by the measurement setup and not by the technique itself. Highly accurate control of the filtering wavelength in combination with control of filtering strength by adjustment of the length of the twin-core fibers allows complex filter profiles to be implemented by cascading of several different filters.
