The essay nalyzes the connection of "Il Cicerone" by Giancarlo Passeroni with the humorous and digressive literature, especially with Sterne's work.

Parallelized short read assembly of large genomes using de Bruijn graphs

2011

Abstract Background Next-generation sequencing technologies have given rise to the explosive increase in DNA sequencing throughput, and have promoted the recent development of de novo short read assemblers. However, existing assemblers require high execution times and a large amount of compute resources to assemble large genomes from quantities of short reads. Results We present PASHA, a parallelized short read assembler using de Bruijn graphs, which takes advantage of hybrid computing architectures consisting of both shared-memory multi-core CPUs and distributed-memory compute clusters to gain efficiency and scalability. Evaluation using three small-scale real paired-end datasets shows tha…

Soil structure and bypass flwo processes in a Vertsol under sprinkler and drip irrigation.

2007

In this paper morphological and physical characteristics, as well as flow behaviour of a Mediterranean Vertisol under the influence of two different irrigation systems currently used for irrigation, i.e. drip and sprinkler systems, were compared. No differences in soil texture, compaction and in potential cracking were found on cores from the two fields. However, field application of methylene blue showed the presence of continuous macropores, penetrating up to depths of 20-25 cm from the soil surface, in the field where the drip system was in use (field 1). This was considered to be the pre-existing soil structure. Instead, macropores terminating at a depth ranging between 5 and 10 cm from…

COMBINED USE OF INNOVATIVE PASSIVE CONTROL DEVICES AND CONVENTIONAL BASE ISOLATION STRATEGIES

2021

This manuscript contains the main part of my research performed in the last three years at the Department of Engineering, University of Palermo, at the Department of Basic Sciences in Engineering Sciences (Unit of Applied Mechanics), University of Innsbruck, Austria and at the company FIP Mec, Selvazzano Dentro, Padova. Within the research framework of Structural Control, this dissertation proposes novel passive control strategies to mitigate the dynamic response of base isolated structural systems. Among the several types of devices proposed in literature, Tuned Mass Dampers and Tuned Liquid Column Dampers are undoubtedly the most widely employed vibration control devices for coupling with…

Modelling of a hydro-pneumatic system for heave compensation

2018

This paper presents a mathematical model of the dynamic behaviour of a passive heave compensation system. The main purpose is to develop a model that enables cost-efficient prototyping and testing of the control system in an active heave compensator. The physics are described by first principles, and result in 21 ordinary differential equations. Temperature calculations are included as an option during simulation in order to investigate its effect on the results. Similarly is a non-ideal gas law (Redlich-Kwong equation) implemented and compared to the ideal gas law. Verification against field data shows that the model is in good accordance with real-life drilling operations. It is further s…

Optical contrast of 2D InSe on SiO2/Si and transparent substrates using bandpass filters

2017

The particular optical and electronic properties recently reported for 2D InSe depict this 2D material as being very versatile for future electronic and optoelectronic devices with tunable and optimized functionalities. For its fundamental study and the development of practical applications, rapid and accurate identification methods of atomically thin InSe are essential. Here, we demonstrate an enhancement of the optical contrast between InSe nanosheets and the underlying SiO2/Si substrate by illuminating with a 40 nm wide bandpass filter centered at 500 nm. Moreover, we study the optical contrast of 2D InSe on transparent substrates. Our results suggest that a good optical contrast is achi…

Idrarchia, resistenza marittima e la produzione della razza. Intervista a Marcus Rediker

2021

In silico methods for metabolomic and toxicity prediction of zearalenone, α-zearalenone and β-zearalenone.

2020

Zearalenone (ZEA), α-zearalenol (α-ZEL) and β-zearalenol (β-ZEL) (ZEA's metabolites) are co/present in cereals, fruits or their products. All three with other compounds, constitute a cocktail-mixture that consumers (and also animals) are exposed and never entirely evaluated, nor in vitro nor in vivo. Effect of ZEA has been correlated to endocrine disruptor alterations as well as its metabolites (α-ZEL and β-ZEL); however, toxic effects associated to metabolites generated once ingested are unknown and difficult to study. The present study defines the metabolomics profile of all three mycotoxins (ZEA, α-ZEL and β-ZEL) and explores the prediction of their toxic effects proposing an in silico w…

In-situ intestinal rat perfusions for human Fabs prediction and BCS permeability class determination: Investigation of the single-pass vs. the Doluis…

2015

Intestinal drug permeability has been recognized as a critical determinant of the fraction dose absorbed, with direct influence on bioavailability, bioequivalence and biowaiver. The purpose of this research was to compare intestinal permeability values obtained by two different intestinal rat perfusion methods: the single-pass intestinal perfusion (SPIP) model and the Doluisio (closed-loop) rat perfusion method. A list of 15 model drugs with different permeability characteristics (low, moderate, and high, as well as passively and actively absorbed) was constructed. We assessed the rat intestinal permeability of these 15 model drugs in both SPIP and the Doluisio methods, and evaluated the co…
