Shipping Costs and Inflation
2023
The Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted global supply chains, leading to shipment delays and soaring shipping costs. We study the impact of global shipping costs-measured by the Baltic Dry Index (BDI)-on domestic prices for a large panel of countries during the period 1992-2021. We find that spikes in the BDI are followed by sizable and statistically signif-icant increases in import prices, PPI, headline, and core inflation, as well as inflation expec-tations. The impact is similar in magnitude but more persistent than for shocks to global oil and food prices. The effects are more muted in countries where imports make up a smaller share of domestic consumption, and those with inflation targetin…
Oil prices and inflation dynamics: Evidence from advanced and developing economies
2018
Abstract We study the impact of fluctuations in global oil prices on domestic inflation using an unbalanced panel of 72 advanced and developing economies over the period from 1970 to 2015. We find that a 10% increase in global oil inflation increases, on average, domestic inflation by about 0.4 percentage points on impact, with the effect vanishing after two years and being similar between advanced and developing economies. We also find that the effect is asymmetric, with positive oil price shocks having a larger effect than negative ones. The impact of oil price shocks, however, has declined over time due in large part to a more credible monetary policy and less reliance on energy imports.…
Global Food Prices and Domestic Inflation: Some Cross-Country Evidence
2015
We study the impact of global food price shocks on domestic inflation in a large group of countries. For advanced economies, a 10% increase in global food inflation raises domestic inflation by about 0.5 percentage point after a year; however, the impact has declined over time and become less persistent. The global food price shocks of the 2000s had a much bigger impact on domestic inflation in emerging and developing economies than in advanced economies. This could reflect the smaller share of food in the consumption baskets in advanced economies. We also provide evidence that inflation expectations are more anchored in advanced than in emerging economies, which could also explain the smal…
Space matters: meristem expansion triggers corona formation in Passiflora
2015
Background and aims Flower meristems differ from vegetative meristems in various aspects. One characteristic is the capacity for ongoing meristem expansion providing space for new structures. Here, corona formation in four species of Passiflora is investigated to understand the spatio-temporal conditions of its formation and to clarify homology of the corona elements. Methods One bird-pollinated species with a single-rowed tubular corona (Passiflora tulae) and three insect-pollinated species with three (P. standleyi Killip), four (P. foetida L. ‘Sanctae Martae’) and six (P. foetida L. var. hispida) ray-shaped corona rows are chosen as representative examples for the study. Flower developmen…
Automatic target recognition using 3D passive sensing and imaging with independent component analysis
2009
We present an overview of a method using Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and 3D Integral Imaging (II) technique to recognize 3D objects at different orientations. This method has been successfully applied to the recognition and classification of 3D scenes.
Three Dimensional Sensing, Visualization, and Display
2008
This keynote address will present an overview of recent advances in Three-dimensional (3D) sensing, imaging and display. We shall discuss both passive sensing integral imaging and active sensing computational holographic imaging for 3D visualization, display, and image recognition. Mathematical analysis, computer simulations, and optical experimental results will be presented. There are numerous applications of these technologies including medical 3D imaging, 3D visualization, 3D identification and inspection, 3D television, 3D video, 3D multimedia, interactive communication, education, entertainment, and commerce.
Joint Distribution of Polarization-Multiplexed UWB and WiMAX Radio in PON
2009
[EN] In this paper, the feasibility of the joint distribution of ultra-wideband (UWB) and WIMAX wireless using polarization multiplexing as a coexistence technique is proposed and experimentally demonstrated within the framework of passive optical networks (PON). Four single- and orthogonal-polarization multiplexing schemes are studied targeting to reduce the mutual interference when UWB and WiMAX are distributed jointly through standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without transmission impairments compensation techniques and amplification. Experimental results indicate successful transmission up to 25 km, in SSMF exceeding the range in typical PON deployments. The radio link penalty introduced…
VEF Traces: A Framework for Modelling MPI Traffic in Interconnection Network Simulators
2015
Simulation is often used to evaluate the behaviour and measure the performance of computing systems. Specifically, in high-performance interconnection networks, the simulation has been extensively considered to verify the behaviour of the network itself and to evaluate its performance. In this context, network simulation must be fed with network traffic, also referred to as network workload, whose nature has been traditionally synthetic. These workloads can be used for the purpose of driving studies on network performance, but often such workloads are not accurate enough if a realistic evaluation is pursued. For this reason, other non-synthetic workloads have gained popularity over last dec…
