Professional diagnostic delay in osteosarcomas of the jaws

2020

A series of 20 consecutive patients with an osteosarcoma of the jaws has been evaluated with regard to possible professional diagnostic delay. When set at an arbitrarily chosen period beyond three months, professional delay occurred in 15 patients, the mean being 21 months and the median 11 months. In five of the 15 patients a wrong diagnosis has been rendered on the biopsy specimen, being fibrous dysplasia (2x), osteoma (2x) and, in case of palatomaxillary swelling, pleomorphic adenoma (1x). In the other ten patients the initial clinicoradiographic features were misleading and apparently not indicative of a malignancy, except for one patient in whom a distinct widening of the periodontal l…

Primary biliary cholangitis in Spain. Results of a Delphi study of epidemiology, diagnosis, follow-up and treatment.

2018

Effectiveness of a recent topical sialogogue in the management of drug-induced xerostomia

2011

Objectives: Use of certain drugs is the most common aetiology of xerostomia. Systemic sialogogues provide a longer effect than topic ones, but also induce relevant side effects. Topical sialogogues, as malic acid, allow a safe use as they induce no systemic side-effects or pharmacological interactions, being especially interesting in cases of mild hyposalivation and oral dryness, mainly the chronic use of xerostomizing drugs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical effect of 1% malic acid in patients affected by xerostomia due to antihypertensives or antidepressants. Study Design: 10 patients with drug-induced xerostomia were prospectively evaluated before and after using malic a…

Oral Health Scales: Design of an Oral Health Scale of Infectious Potential

2013

Objectives: In this paper we propose a new Global Oral Health Scale that will allow the infectious potential of the oral cavity, clinically manifest as local and focal infections, to be condensed into a single parameter. Study Design: Based on a number of oral health scales previously designed by our group, we designed a final version that incorporates dental and periodontal variables (some of them evaluated using corroborated objective indices) that reflect the presence of caries and periodontal disease. Results: The application of the proposed oral health scale requires the examination of 6 sites per tooth (mesio- buccal, medio-buccal, disto-buccal, disto-lingual, medio-lingual and mesio-…

Childhood maltreatment and clinical severity of treatment‐resistant depression in a French cohort of outpatients (FACE‐DR): One‐year follow‐up

2020

International audience; Childhood maltreatment is associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). It not only increases the risk of lifetime MDD, but it also aggravates its course. Among depressed patients, 20-30% of them experience treatment-resistance depression (TRD). We aimed to assess the association between childhood maltreatment, severity of depression in a unipolar TRD sample, and patient outcomes after one-year of follow-up. Methods: Patients were recruited for a prospective cohort from the French network of TRD expert centers. Depressive symptom severity was assessed with the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology se…

Diabetes Mellitus and Ramadan: Physiopathological, Clinical and Therapeutic Aspects

2017

Fasting from dawn to sunset during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam. A significant number of diabetic patients insist on fasting during Ramadan against the recommendations of their physicians. Fasting in diabetic subjects may be associated with increased risk of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, dehydration and thrombosis. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus are predisposed to major metabolic risks. Another problem is the reluctance of diabetic patients in taking their medications during the fast; therefore the timing and the dosage of anti-diabetic drugs must be adapted for each patient. It is important for diabetic patients who wish to fast during …

Итоговое резюме KDIGO 2018 по гепатиту С для рекомендаций по ХБП: достижения в оценке и менеджменте

2021

Infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) has adverse liver, kidney, and cardiovascular consequences in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those on dialysis therapy and in those with a kidney transplant. Since the publication of the original Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) HCV Guideline in 2008, major advances in HCV management, particularly with the advent of direct-acting antiviral therapies, have now made the cure of HCV possible in CKD patients. In addition, diagnostic techniques have evolved to enable the noninvasive diagnosis of liver fibrosis. Therefore, the Work Group undertook a comprehensive review and update of the KDIGO HCV in CKD Guideline.…

Laparoscopic approach to acute abdomen from the Consensus Development Conference of the Società Italiana di Chirurgia Endoscopica e nuove tecnologie …

2012

Abstract BACKGROUND: In January 2010, the SICE (Italian Society of Endoscopic Surgery), under the auspices of the EAES, decided to revisit the clinical recommendations for the role of laparoscopy in abdominal emergencies in adults, with the primary intent being to update the 2006 EAES indications and supplement the existing guidelines on specific diseases. METHODS: Other Italian surgical societies were invited into the Consensus to form a panel of 12 expert surgeons. In order to get a multidisciplinary panel, other stakeholders involved in abdominal emergencies were invited along with a patient's association. In November 2010, the panel met in Rome to discuss each chapter according to the D…

Clinical Decision Support System To Prevent Toxicity In Patients Treated With Digoxin

2011

In this chapter, authors develop a system for prevention and detection of congestive heart failure and fibrillation. Due to its narrow therapeutic range more than 10% of the patients treated with DGX can suffer toxic effects, but it is estimated that half of the cases of digitalis toxicity could be prevented. Two multivariate models were developed to prevent digitalis toxicity.
