Oral mucosal lesions and their association with tobacco use and qat chewing among Yemeni dental patients.
2014
Objectives: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of oral mucosal lesions (OMLs) in patients attending outpa - tient dental clinics in Sana`a university, Yemen, and to evaluate the association of such lesions with age, gender, and oral habits. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 409 subjects (272 males, 137 females, age: 15-86 years). Detailed clinical examination was performed in accordance with international criteria. Patient history in - cluded age, gender, education, denture wearing and risk habits (tobacco use and qat chewing). Data were analyzed using SPSS 19.00. Results: The prevalence of OMLs was 58.4% with a significant difference between men (63.6%) and …
Antisynthetase syndrome (AS) in patients with diffuse interstitial lung disease (ILD)
2015
Objectives: To determine the prevalence of SAS in patients with ILD and its clinical characteristics, evolution and specific manifestations linked to each antisynthetase antibodies and highlight the need for its screening in ILD. Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients registered in the last two years in our ILD unit, determining antisynthetase antibodies and analyzing clinical, radiological, functional data and illness evolution. Results: 119 ILD patients were included, 10.9% had antisynthetase antibodies, the most prevalent were Jo-1 (46.1%) and PL-12 (38.5%). In PL-12 patients inicial and respiratory syntoms were predominant, whereas in the Jo-1 patients were more frequent extrapulmo…
Unicystic ameloblastoma in 3 year old paediatric patient: a rare entity
2013
Unicystic ameloblastoma (UA) is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor of the jaws that commonly occurs in 2nd and 3rd decade of life. In fact, this entity is rare in children under 12 years of age. It is characterised as a distinct variant of ameloblastoma, exhibiting a less aggressive behaviour and a lower rate of recurrence than solid conventional ameloblastoma. There are very few reported cases of UA occurring in children below five years of age. The purpose of this case report is to describe a case of UA involving the crown of an unerupted maxillary second premolar in a 3 year old girl. The pathogenesis, clinical appearance, radiographic presentation, histological findings and managemen…
Burning Mouth Syndrome
2008
ABSTRACT Background Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is an atypical orofacial algesic syndrome. The aim of the authors' research was to investigate the morphological characteristics of peripheral blood circulation in patients with BMS in comparison with those of the peripheral blood circulation in healthy people. Methods The authors examined 28 subjects, of whom 14 (10 women and four men) had BMS and 14 (nine women and five men) were healthy control subjects. They performed videocapillaroscopic examination with a capillaroscope with a fiber-optic probe at a magnification of ×200, which allowed them to examine the morphological characteristics within the capillaroscopic area accurately. Results …

The clinical efficacy of SLIT has been established in a number of clinical trials and meta-analyses. However, because SLIT is self-administered…
Correlation of skeletal muscle blood oxygenation level-dependent MRI and skin laser doppler flowmetry in patients with systemic sclerosis
2013
Purpose To investigate the origin of skeletal muscle BOLD MRI alterations in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) by correlating BOLD MRI T2* signal of calf muscles with microcirculatory blood flow of calf skin measured by laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF). Materials and Methods BOLD MRI (3T) and LDF measurements were performed in 12 consecutive SSc patients (6 women, 6 men; mean age 54.0 ± 10.0 years) and 12 healthy volunteers (4 men, 8 women; mean age 44.7 ± 13.1 years). For both modalities, the same cuff compression paradigm at mid-thigh level was used. LDF datasets were acquired using a PeriScan PIM II Imager (Perimed AB, Stockholm, Sweden) at the upper calf corresponding to the level of …
Deflazacort in Duchenne dystrophy: Study of long-term effect
1994
A randomized double-blind controlled trial of deflazacort was conducted in 28 Duchenne muscular dystrophy patients either treated with deflazacort 2.0 mg/kg alternate-day therapy or placebo. The deflazacort group showed significant improvement in climbing stairs (P < 0.01), in rising from a chair, Gower's maneuver, and walking (P < 0.0025) after 6 months of treatment. After 1 year, all the above changes remained significantly improved and the MRC index was significantly better (P < 0.05) in the treated group. After 2 years, a significant change was found in the MRC index: higher scores in walking, chair rising (P < 0.02), and grade and time of Gower's maneuver (P < 0.05) were found. The mea…
Dropout from exercise randomized controlled trials among people with depression: A meta-analysis and meta regression
2015
Abstract Objective Exercise has established efficacy in improving depressive symptoms. Dropouts from randomized controlled trials (RCT’s) pose a threat to the validity of this evidence base, with dropout rates varying across studies. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the prevalence and predictors of dropout rates among adults with depression participating in exercise RCT’s. Method Three authors identified RCT’s from a recent Cochrane review and conducted updated searches of major electronic databases from 01/2013 to 08/2015. We included RCT’s of exercise interventions in people with depression (including major depressive disorder (MDD) and depressive symptoms…
