Scarf and Akin osteotomies for moderate and severe hallux valgus

2008

Abstract Background The scarf and the combined scarf-Akin procedures are reliable therapeutic tools and can obtain effective correction of symptomatic moderate to severe hallux valgus deformities. Methods The data from 30 patients (37 feet) with moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity who had scarf osteotomies have been retrospectively reviewed. 32 Akin and 77 Weil osteotomies were also carried out at the same stage. The average follow-up was 22 months. Standardized methods of radiographic and clinical data collection were obtained before and after surgery. Patient satisfaction was assessed at follow-up. Results Radiological assessment revealed a significant improvement ( p p Conclusions…

Treatment of Axillary hyperhidrosis

2022

BACKGROUND Axillary hyperhidrosis characterized by excessive sweating in the axillary regions is a frustrating chronic autonomic disorder leading to social embarrassment, impaired quality of life and usually associated with palmoplantar hyperhidrosis. Identifying the condition and its cause is central to the management. AIM The aim of this article is to discuss treatment options for axillary hyperhidrosis. METHODS Comprehensive literature search using PubMed and Google Scholar was performed to review relevant published articles related to diagnosis and treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis. RESULTS Treatment modalities for axillary hyperhydrosis vary from topical and systemic agents to inject…

Activation and torque deficits in ACL-reconstructed patients 4 months post-operative

2001

This study compares knee extension and flexion torques and electromyographic (EMG) activity of normal and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-reconstructed knees during maximal unilateral isometric and isokinetic tests performed 4–5 months after ACL reconstruction. The subjects consisted of 3 age- and activity-matched groups of 6 subjects: a healthy control group (Ctrl) and 2 groups of patients, with Kenneth-Jones technique using autologous patellar-ligament graft (KJ group) and autologous graft from the semitendinosus tendon (ST group). When compared to the Ctrl group values, each patient group had significant bilateral extension torque deficits in isometric and at slow velocity concentric co…

015: Relation between platelet activation and inflammation indexes measured on admission and new onset atrial fibrillation in patients with acute myo…

2013

ObjectivePlatelet activation is present in atrial fibrillation (AF), but there is some debate whether this is due to AF itself and/or to underlying cardiovascular diseases. We aim to determine the association between a marker of platelet reactivity (mean platelet volume (MPV)) and systemic inflammation (CRP) measured on admission, and new onset episode of AF in patients with MI.Patients and methodsProspective cohort of 4994 consecutive patients with AMI. Patients with paroxysmal or persistent AF were excluded.Results426 (8.5%) patients were diagnosed with a new onset of AF during the in-hospital-stay (mean stay 3±2 days). These patients were older (75 vs 65, p<0.001), predominantly male, an…
