Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is chronic hair loss caused by effects of androgens in those with a genetic predisposition, resulting in hair follicle miniaturization. This work presents the identification of bacteria and fungi colonies in insect infesting books, by cultural-independent methodologies based on molecular biology techniques. Microbial genomic DNA extraction,<em> in vitro</em> amplification of specific target sequences by polymerase chain reactions (PCR), sequencing and sequence analysis were performed. Abstract Molecular based assays for detection of species are a powerful tool to supplement morphological methods that may be time and labor intensive. Here we describe a sensitive TaqMan real time polymerase chain reaction assay that specifically detects the presence of Acartia tonsa in mixed plankton samples. The assay is used to find this non-native copepod in samples collected in Norwegian coastal waters.
