Preliminary identification of self-incompatibility genotypes of Sicilian almond landraces

2018

Sicily is the main almond producer in Italy. The almond tree is one of the main protagonists of the Sicilian agrarian landscape, especially in the winter, when the bare branches are covered by white or pinkish flowers. Its presence is particularly significant in the province of Agrigento, in Syracuse and in Ragusa areas, where the almond nut is used for fresh consumption and for the preparation of typical sweets. The extremely rich Sicilian almond germplasm can be useful for genetic improvement, since many local landraces possess aromatic characteristics of the nuts of high value. Self-incompatibility in this species is gametophytic and controlled by a multi-allelic S locus, coding for the …

Use of standard and setup of non conventional techniques for the elimination of viruses associated with Fig Mosaic Disease (FMD) in fig germplasm (Fi…

2017

Abstract Ficus carica L. is considered one of the oldest fruit trees in the Mediterranean basin and is widely grown and harvested for the consumption of its fruits dry and fresh. This species is affected by different virus diseases, especially by Fig mosaic disease (FMD), for which Fig leaf mottle-associated virus 1 (FLMaV-1), Fig leaf mottle-associated virus 2 (FLMaV-2), Fig mild mottling-associated virus (FMMaV), Fig mosaic virus (FMV), Fig latent virus 1 (FLV-1), Fig badnavirus 1 (FBV-1) and Fig fleck-associated virus (FFkaV) are associated. FMD is the most widespread disorder of this species, which represents a threat and a constraint for healthy fig production and germplasm exchange. T…

The commercial activity of tourism companies. Perception of tourism students

2019

Gianni Rodari and Tamara Lisitsian: Western Communist Parties as Vehicles of Cultural Encounter

2013

Abstract. The case of Gianni Rodari, an Italian communist children's writer whose books were received by the Soviet public with exceptional favour, proves how relations with western communist parties happened to be instrumental in opening up the Soviet cultural system to the world. Rodari became, in fact, well-known in the Soviet Union before attaining fame in his homeland; from the Sixties on, however, things became to change, and from this point on, it may be argued, children from different sides of the iron curtain were brought up reading the same books. Rodari's works were the expression of the point of view of a western communist – in many cases, more western than communist – and they …

A new actor involved in hypothalamic glucose detection : the Transient Receptor Potential Canonical (TRPC) channels

2015

Hyperglycemia is detected and integrated by the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) which, in turn, inhibits food intake and triggers insulin secretion. The MBH houses specialized glucose-sensitive (GS) neurons, which directly or indirectly modulate their electrical activity in response to changes in glucose level. In a first study, we hypothesized that indirect detection of glucose by MBH GS neurons involves the secretion of endozepine by astrocytes, a gliotransmitter known to inhibit food intake in response to hyperglycemia. The present work shows that endozepines selectively activate anorexigenic MBH pro-opiomelanotortine (POMC) neurons. In the second study, we show that the direct detection o…

Human taste receptors : study of structure-function relationships

2019

Sweet, umami and bitter taste detectors are membrane receptors that belong to the family of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). They are characterized by the existence of a hydrophobic transmembrane domain (TMD) and an activation mechanism that involves a heterotrimeric G protein.Human has 25 bitter taste receptors TAS2R. These receptors belong to class A GPCRs. Their architecture consists of a TMD structured in 7 -helix which form the orthosteric binding site of bitter molecules. The umami taste receptor is a heterodimer composed of the TAS1R1 and TAS1R3 subunits, while the TAS1R2 and TAS1R3 subunits form the sweet taste receptor. Each subunits belongs to the class C GPCRs and shares a c…

A higher incidence of moult–breeding overlap in great tits across time is linked to an increased frequency of second clutches: a possible effect of g…

2021

The rise of temperatures due to global warming is related to a lengthening of the breeding season in many bird species. This allows more pairs to attempt two clutches within the breeding season, thus finishing their breeding activity later in the season and therefore potentially overlapping these with post–breeding moult. We tested whether this occurred in two Spanish great tit Parus major populations. The proportion of pairs laying second clutches increased from 1 % to 32 % over the study period in one of the populations (Sagunto, 1995–2019), while it did not change in the other (Quintos, 2006–2019; mean 5 %). We did not find any temporal trend for moult start date of late–breeding birds i…

Robust Principal Component Analysis of Data with Missing Values

2015

Principal component analysis is one of the most popular machine learning and data mining techniques. Having its origins in statistics, principal component analysis is used in numerous applications. However, there seems to be not much systematic testing and assessment of principal component analysis for cases with erroneous and incomplete data. The purpose of this article is to propose multiple robust approaches for carrying out principal component analysis and, especially, to estimate the relative importances of the principal components to explain the data variability. Computational experiments are first focused on carefully designed simulated tests where the ground truth is known and can b…
