Fracture stratigraphy of Mesozoic platform carbonates, Agri Valley, southern Italy
2022
The outcropping platform carbonates form a layered succession crosscut by a dense array of bed-parallel pressure solution seams and veins, oblique-to-bedding pressure solution seams, and high-angle joints, veins, and pressure solution seams. Altogether, these structural elements form sub-seismic heterogeneities that formed during the polyphase tectonic evolution of the southern Apennines fold and-thrust belt, Italy. Aiming at assessing the role exerted by the primary carbonate architecture on failure modes and fracture geometry and distribution, we conduct a multi-disciplinary study by performing stratigraphic, petrographic, mineralogical, and mesoscale structural analyses. Based on carbona…
An Inverse Problem for the Relativistic Boltzmann Equation
2020
We consider an inverse problem for the Boltzmann equation on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian spacetime $(M,g)$ with an unknown metric $g$. We consider measurements done in a neighbourhood $V\subset M$ of a timelike path $\mu$ that connects a point $x^-$ to a point $x^+$. The measurements are modelled by a source-to-solution map, which maps a source supported in $V$ to the restriction of the solution to the Boltzmann equation to the set $V$. We show that the source-to-solution map uniquely determines the Lorentzian spacetime, up to an isometry, in the set $I^+(x^-)\cap I^-(x^+)\subset M$. The set $I^+(x^-)\cap I^-(x^+)$ is the intersection of the future of the point $x^-$ and the past of th…
Improved innovative product strategy assessment model in market research context
2019
In the innovation economy, companies more often face the need quickly and efficiently evaluate not only their existing product and service portfolios in the context of the industry’s potential, but also evaluate theoretical concepts of innovations. There are various systems for evaluating innovation concepts and already existing products and/or services for companies that are planning to expand their business in a new industry. The innovation economy is characterized by the convergence of innovations and the most demanded products on the market with continuous market upgrades. A company which wants to grow in a new industry faces an assessment challenge between already existing, demanded pr…
On Limits at Infinity of Weighted Sobolev Functions
2022
We study necessary and sufficient conditions for a Muckenhoupt weight $w \in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb R^d)$ that yield almost sure existence of radial, and vertical, limits at infinity for Sobolev functions $u \in W^{1,p}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb R^d,w)$ with a $p$-integrable gradient $|\nabla u|\in L^p(\mathbb R^d,w)$. The question is shown to subtly depend on the sense in which the limit is taken. First, we fully characterize the existence of radial limits. Second, we give essentially sharp sufficient conditions for the existence of vertical limits. In the specific setting of product and radial weights, we give if and only if statements. These generalize and give new proofs for results of…
Mazo pilsētu attīstības iespējas Vidzemē: Raunas piemērs
2016
Analysis of a viscoelastic phase separation model
2020
A new model for viscoelastic phase separation is proposed, based on a systematically derived conservative two-fluid model. Dissipative effects are included by phenomenological viscoelastic terms. By construction, the model is consistent with the second law of thermodynamics, and we study well-posedness of the model, i.e., existence of weak solutions, a weak-strong uniqueness principle, and stability with respect to perturbations, which are proven by means of relative energy estimates. A good qualitative agreement with mesoscopic simulations is observed in numerical tests.
Breathing woodwinds : music therapy for asthma and COPD rehabilitation
2014
Filhan(2010) arvion mukaan hengityssairaudet koskettavat vuosittain miljoonaa suomalaista. Tutkimus tarjoaa vaihtoehdon potilaan omaa vastuuta korostavaan kuntoutukseen. Kahdentoista viikon tuloksissa kvalitatiivinen materiaali antoi tuloksia. PEF lukemat pysyivät samoina, m…
Why, whether and how to use high-flow nasal therapy in acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
2021
Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) represents the standard of care for respiratory support of patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) developing acute hypercapnic respiratory failure (AHRF) [1]. NIV has been shown to reduce patient’s work of breathing and mortality and be feasibly implemented in various hospital location facilities at different timing, based on the severity of AHRF [2] and it is also widely used in clinical practice by physicians [3]. However, clinicians’ knowledge, experience and expertise in the management of NIV are crucial for its success in order to overcome common problems that may lower its effectiveness such as patients’ discomf…
The geriatric asthma: pitfalls and challenges
2016
Historically, asthma has been envisioned as a disease of younger ages. This has led to the assumption that respiratory symptoms suggestive of asthma occurring in older ages are to be attributed to conditions other than asthma, mainly COPD. Old observational reports and new epidemiological studies confirm that asthma is as frequent in older as it is in younger populations. Nevertheless, under-recognition, misdiagnosis and under-treatment are still relevant issues. The characterization of asthma in the aged suffers from the fact that there has been very little original research in this field. Indeed, geriatric asthma is often excluded from clinical trials because of age and comorbidities. The…
The prevalence and predictors of bipolar and borderline personality disorders comorbidity: Systematic review and meta-analysis
2016
Introduction Data about the prevalence of borderline personality (BPD) and bipolar (BD) disorders comorbidity are scarce and the boundaries remain controversial. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating the prevalence of BPD in BD and BD in people with BPD. Methods Two independent authors searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO and the Cochrane Library from inception till November 4, 2015. Articles reporting the prevalence of BPD and BD were included. A random effects meta-analysis and meta-regression were conducted. Results Overall, 42 papers were included: 28 considering BPD in BD and 14 considering BD in BPD. The trim and fill adjusted analysis demonstrated the prevale…
