LONGITUDINAL TRACKING OF MUSCULAR POWER CHANGES OF NCAA DIVISION I COLLEGIATE WOMEN GYMNASTS

2004

Gymnastics relies upon power as a critical component of sports-specific fitness. The purpose of this study was to monitor long-term training adaptations in the power of National Collegiate Athletics Association Division I women gymnasts. Twenty members of a women's gymnastic team (aged 18-22) were tracked over 3 years with the first year a baseline year of testing. Whole body power for the counter-movement (CMJ) and squat (SJ) vertical jump was obtained via force plate analyses at 2 assessment time points during each year (February and November). Results showed significant (p < or = 0.05) and continued increases in peak power output in the CMJ and SJ at each biannual assessment. Improvement…

The acceptability of an Internet-based self-help treatment for fear of public speaking

2009

ABSTRACT Several randomised controlled studies have shown the efficacy of Internet-based self-help treatments. These studies have centred their attention on axis I (efficacy) of the Guidelines for Empirically Validated Treatments, although there are a few studies that also take into account axis II (effectiveness). The aim of the present work was to test the acceptability of an Internet-based self-help program for fear of public speaking and to compare its acceptability with the same treatment administered by a therapist. Fifty-two participants suffering from social phobia were randomly selected to take part in one of these treatments. All participants reported being satisfied with the trea…

Plantar pressure distribution during running with a self-customized foot orthosis in a home microwave.

2021

The individualization of a custom-made foot orthosis could provide improvements in plantar loading distribution regarding a prefabricated one. However, not all runners can afford it because of its high cost. A new type of low-cost prefabricated foot orthoses with self-customization could be the solution. The aim of the study was to evaluate if self-customized prefabricated foot orthoses (SCFO) could improve plantar pressure distribution with respect to generic prefabricated ones without customization, during the intense prolonged running. Thirty healthy recreational runners performed two tests of 30 min running on a treadmill, each one with a foot orthosis condition, on different days. Mean…

Cortical Patterns of Pleasurable Musical Chills Revealed by High-Density EEG

2020

Music has the capacity to elicit strong positive feelings in humans by activating the brain’s reward system. Because group emotional dynamics is a central concern of social neurosciences, the study of emotion in natural/ecological conditions is gaining interest. This study aimed to show that high-density EEG (HD-EEG) is able to reveal patterns of cerebral activities previously identified by fMRI or PET scans when the subject experiences pleasurable musical chills. We used HD-EEG to record participants (11 female, 7 male) while listening to their favorite pleasurable chill-inducing musical excerpts; they reported their subjective emotional state from low pleasure up to chills. HD-EEG results…

Individual alpha peak frequency, an important biomarker for live Z-Score training neurofeedback in adolescents with learning disabilities

2021

Learning disabilities (LDs) have an estimated prevalence between 5% and 9% in the pediatric population and are associated with difficulties in reading, arithmetic, and writing. Previous electroencephalography (EEG) research has reported a lag in alpha-band development in specific LD phenotypes, which seems to offer a possible explanation for differences in EEG maturation. In this study, 40 adolescents aged 10–15 years with LDs underwent 10 sessions of Live Z-Score Training Neurofeedback (LZT-NF) Training to improve their cognition and behavior. Based on the individual alpha peak frequency (i-APF) values from the spectrogram, a group with normal i-APF (ni-APF) and a group with low i-APF (li-…

Vertical Line Array (VLA) Beam - Forming Algorithm with constant beam width.

2005

The algorithm proposed is a beam-forming algorithm. Many beam-steering and beam-forming algorithms exist and they are all based on the control of delay times between the signals driving the loudspeakers of the line array; this kind of control produces a variable beam-width depending on steering angle and frequency. In our case beam width doesn't depend on frequency and steering angle because a specific beam forming technique was applied by shading the amplitudes of signals for each element of the array according to the frequency applied. Furthermore a weighting function was utilized for spatial windowing. Spatial windowing allows reduction of secondary lobes without varying the directivity …

Monilukutaidon opetus on ennen kaikkea uusien kirjoitustaitojen opetusta

2014

Täysipainoinen osallistuminen tulevaisuuden yhteiskuntaan vaatii paljon laajempia kirjoitustaitoja kuin koulun kirjoittamisen opetus tällä hetkellä tarjoaa. Uusiin opetussuunnitelmiin tuleva monilukutaito voi tarjota väylän näiden uusien kirjoitustaitojen opiskeluun, mikäli aktiiviseen osallistumiseen ja luovaan sisällöntuotantoon ohjaavat uudet kirjoitustaidot nostetaan tasaveroisesti uusien lukutaitojen rinnalle. Uudistuksella on kuitenkin jo kiire, sillä oppilaat elävät vapaa-ajalla pitkälti jo uusien kirjoitustaitovaatimusten keskellä. nonPeerReviewed

Breaststroke swimmer's knee

1980

The cause of the breaststroke swimmer's knee with medial pain of the knee joint has not been clearly identified. Breaststroke swimmers with knee pain were, therefore, examined arthros copically. None showed any other disorders of their knees than medial synovitis in seven of nine swimmers. Since structural abnormalities could be ruled out, biomechanical analyses utiliz ing cinematographic techniques were used to study patients swimming in a special flume with the speed set at 90% of their best competitive performance. The results indicate that the extension and flexion and also in some cases the hip abduction and adduction movements of the whip kick were performed with high peak angular ve…

COL1A1 Sp1 polymorphism associates with bone density in early puberty.

2006

Optimal acquisition of bone mass in puberty is a key determinant of the lifetime risk of osteoporosis and has a strong genetic basis. We investigated the relationship between the COL1A1 Sp1 polymorphism and BMD in early puberty, and how the genotypes relate to bone size and geometry as well as bone turnover and material properties in 247 10- to 13-year-old girls. Bone properties were measured using DXA, pQCT, and ultrasound. Also, serum P1NP, OC, B-ALP, and TRACP 5b were assessed. Our results showed that girls with the TT genotype had significantly lower BMC and BMD of the total body, lumbar spine, and proximal femur, as well as BUA at the calcaneus, than those with the GT and GG genotype. …
