Influence of Aerobic Exercise After Static Stretching on Flexibility and Strength in Plantar Flexor Muscles

2020

Aerobic exercise could improve stretch-induced strength deficits. However, mechanisms of the improvement were unclear. The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of aerobic exercise after static stretching (SS) on flexibility and isometric strength in ankle plantar-flexor muscles. Fifteen healthy males received two interventions after SS of their ankle plantar-flexor muscles for 5 min. One was aerobic exercise for 10-min on a cycling ergometer, and the other was a 10-min rest as a control. Range of motion (ROM) of ankle dorsiflexion, passive torque at terminal ROM, muscle-tendon unit (MTU) stiffness, muscle tendon junction displacement, peak torque of ankle plantarflexion, and the …

Translanguaging as Playful Subversion of a Monolingual Norm in the Classroom

2018

A large part of the literature on translanguaging as a pedagogical theory has explored how an inclusive multilingual pedagogy can support students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds to actively participate in the classroom. While much of this literature approaches classroom translanguaging as an instructional strategy designed to promote multilingual interactional practices, we analyse how multilingual practices can also take place as subversive language play in an educational context that is driven by a monolingual norm. Our data are video-recorded lessons from secondary-level Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) classrooms in Finland in which students whose L1 is …

Learning and teaching English speaking skills at upper secondary school : the students' and the teachers' views

2013

Tämän päivän globaalissa maailmassa kommunikoiminen yli maantieteellisten rajojen on lähes osa arkipäivää. Suuri osa tästä kansanvälisestä vuorovaikutuksesta tapahtuu suullisesti englannin kielen ollessa maailmanlaajuisen kommunikoinnin lingua franca. Siksi englannin kielen suulliselle kielitaidolle on tarvetta, ja suullista kielitaitoa tulisikin opettaa koulussa. Suomalaisen lukion päättökokeesta, ylioppilaskirjoituksista, puuttuu tällä hetkellä suullisen kielitaidon koe kaikissa vieraissa kielissä. Suullinen kielitaito on testauksen näkökulmasta aliarvostettu ja voin näin myös opetuksessa jäädä taka-alalle, sillä opetus ja harjoittelu vieraalla kielellä keskittyvät usein ensisijaisesti yl…

Teaching and learning oral skills in Finnish upper secondary school : a study of students' and teachers' views on oral skills education

2013

Learning English speaking skills at upper secondary school : the students’ and the teachers’ view

2009

Aika…

Modeling the probability distribution of peak discharge for infiltrating hillslopes

2017

Hillslope response plays a fundamental role in the prediction of peak discharge at the basin outlet. The peak discharge for the critical duration of rainfall and its probability distribution are needed for designing urban infrastructure facilities. This study derives the probability distribution, denoted as GABS model, by coupling three models: (1) the Green-Ampt model for computing infiltration, (2) the kinematic wave model for computing discharge hydrograph from the hillslope, and (3) the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) model for computing design rainfall intensity. The Hortonian mechanism for runoff generation is employed for computing the surface runoff hydrograph. Since the antecede…

Runoff coefficients to predict peak discharge at hillslope scale: A small contribution to theoretical hydrology

2018

The science of hydrology holds a central role in the field of environmental Earth science, being intimately connected to meteorology, climatology, hydrogeology and ecology. In particular, the knowledge of hillslope hydrology is fundamental for understanding the flood phenomenon, for predicting the peak discharge and its probability distribution, which is necessary in many practical applications (design of hydraulic structures, urban, extra-urban planning, etc.). Using different approaches, there have been a multitude of studies on the hydrologic response at hillslope scale. One approach for deriving the hillslope response utilizes, in a distributed form, the differential equations of unstea…

Strong experiences of music in university students

2009

Research in Sweden has recently defined and explored the concept of strong experiences of music, which had been hitherto ignored by much research in the psychology of music and emotion. From a large-scale study of over 900 adults, Gabrielsson and Lindström Wik (2003) found that strong experiences of music included positive and negative responses to music, and could occur with any genre of music. The current research explores the generalisability of the strong experiences of music studied by Gabrielsson and Lindström Wik with a university student population in England, and compares the efficacy of the methods of analyzing accounts. 64 undergraduate students who had elected to take a music ps…

Optimization of BESS Capacity Under a Peak Load Shaving Strategy

2018

Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are becoming increasingly competitive in the global energy landscape, thanks to the strong cost reduction that has taken place in recent years and it is expected to continue in the next future. Among the many benefits BESSs can provide, time shifting can be exploited by electricity consumers to save on the electricity bill, charging the storage during the off-peak hours and discharging when the cost of electricity is high. This paper describes a simple procedure to optimize the BESS capacity under a peak load shaving strategy, in presence of a time-of-use (TOU) electricity rate, able to guarantee, at the same time, the flattest daily power diagram and …
