Van der Woude syndrome- a syndromic form of orofacial clefting

2012

Van der Woude Syndrome is the most common form of syndromic orofacial clefting, accounting for 2% of all cases, and has the phenotype that most closely resembles the more common non-syndromic forms. The syndrome has an autosomal dominant hereditary pattern with variable expressivity and a high degree of penetrance with cardinal clinical features of lip pits with a cleft lip, cleft palate, or both. This case report describes van der Woude syndrome in a 19 year old male patient with a specific reference to the various aspects of this condition, as clinical appearance, etiological factors (genetic aspects), differential diagnosis, investigative procedures and management. Key words:Cleft palate…

Benefit of using an age-adjusted D-dimer cut-off

2015

Introduction: The association between a low-moderate pretest clinical probability and a negative D-dimer (DD) value is able to exclude the possibility of pulmonary embolism (PE). The value of DD seems to increase with age, reducing its specificity. Therefore, we intend to evaluate the usefulness of an age-adjusted cut-off value for age above 50 years, applying the formula suggested by Douma (age*10) set to our laboratory method (age*5) (1) . Patients and Methods: Observational, retrospective study from January to December 2011. DD test were performed to 1515 patients attended in the emergency room of our hospital according to the clinical suspicion made by the doctor who evaluated them. The…

Effects of polyphenols and lipids from Pennisetum glaucum grains on T-cell activation: modulation of Ca2+ and ERK1/ERK2 signaling

2015

International audience; BACKGROUND: Pearl millet (PM), i.e., Pennisetum glaucum, is widely grown in Africa and known for its anti-oxidant and anti-hyperlipidemic properties.METHODS: The P. glaucum grains were obtained from the region of Ouled Aïssa (South of Algeria). We assessed the effects of phenolic compounds and lipids, extracted from seeds of P. glaucum, on rat lymphocyte proliferation, activated by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and ionomycin. In order to explore signaling pathway, triggered by these compounds, we assessed interleukin-2 (IL-2) mRNA expression and extracellular signal-regulated kinase-1/2 (ERK1/ERK2) phosphorylation. Finally, we determined increases in free intracell…

Correlation of oscillatory behaviour in Matlab using wavelets

2014

Here we present a novel computational signal processing approach for comparing two signals of equal length and sampling rate, suitable for application across widely varying areas within the geosciences. By performing a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) followed by Spearman?s rank correlation coefficient analysis, a graphical depiction of links between periodicities present in the two signals is generated via two or three dimensional images. In comparison with alternate approaches, e.g., wavelet coherence, this technique is simpler to implement and provides far clearer visual identification of the inter-series relationships. In particular, we report on a Matlab? code which executes this tec…

A 3D reworking of the urban transformations of Palermo in recent history for a hypothesis of a "City Museum" based on digital visualizations

2021

The objective that drives this research is given by a multitude of information which, in addition to the contribution of technology, allows us to study, analyze, verify and remodel the sites, monuments and evolutions of the city through graphic processes of perspective restitution that start from the analysis of historical photos. The drawing methods, the digital graphic rendering and through the aid of geometric techniques, contribute to the reconstruction of projects and architectures that are now lost, this is possible thanks to the methods of perspective, axonometry and three-dimensional restitution. This remarkable photographic heritage belonging to Palermo, but also to any other city …

Portret staruszki w rosyjskiej memuarystyce kobiecej XIX wieku

2017

Portrayal of an old woman in the memoirs written bythe nineteenth century Russian womenIn the present article has been analysed portrayals of older women which appear in the memoirs of the nineteenth century Russian women writers. J. Sushkova, A. Kern and A. Smirnova-Rosset in their memoirs most often depict remarkable family members such as grandmothers and aunts, family friends. They focus on the analysis of their personalities, spiritual values and kind-heartedness rather than their physical appearance and signs of physical aging. Among the old ladies portrayed in the memoirs we encounter pious women, wise, experienced, understanding and hospitable women as well as overbearing women or …

Electromagnetic transitions andαdecay of the223Panucleus

1999

Actinides with $N\ensuremath{\sim}132$ present the best explored region of pear shape nuclei. Still almost no spectroscopic information is available for the heaviest elements, $Z=91--98,$ which are predicted to be octupole instable. The lack of data for the latter nuclei results from the high fission probability encountered in the heavy-ion reactions used to populate them. In order to overcome this handicap, an $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay tagging technique was used to identify $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays in ${}^{223}\mathrm{Pa}$ produced through the ${}^{208}\mathrm{Pb}{(}^{19}\mathrm{F},4n)$ reaction. A new value of 4.9(4) ms for the half-life of ${}^{223}\mathrm{Pa}$ was obtained as a by-p…

Characterization of molecular processes involved in the pearl formation in Pinctada margaritifera for a sustainable development of pearl farming indu…

2013

Tahiti’s pearl farming industry plays a major socio-economic role in French Polynesia. In an increasingly competitive market where the production of high quality pearls becomes essential, research can help secure and ensure sustainable production. In that context, Ifremer, in close collaboration with the “direction des resources marines” (French Polynesian government agency) has developed research projects on the “sustainable development of pearl farming”. This program is organized along 3 axes: (1) understanding the animal physiology and initiating a genetically selective breeding program of donor oysters; (2) understanding pearl oyster larvae dispersal and recruitment; (3) understanding t…

A probabilistic framework for automatic prostate segmentation with a statistical model of shape and appearance

2011

International audience; Prostate volume estimation from segmented prostate contours in Trans Rectal Ultrasound (TRUS) images aids in diagnosis and treatment of prostate diseases, including prostate cancer. However, accurate, computationally efficient and automatic segmentation of the prostate in TRUS images is a challenging task owing to low Signal-To-Noise-Ratio (SNR), speckle noise, micro-calcifications and heterogeneous intensity distribution inside the prostate region. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic framework for propagation of a parametric model derived from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of prior shape and posterior probability values to achieve the prostate segmentatio…
