Sicily currently has no forest areas with certification of sustainable forest management. This work analyzes the possibility of applying the criteria and indicators of PEFC certification of sustainable forest management in two study-cases: the municipal forest of Bivona (AG) and a forest area in the Madonie Mountains (PA). Both are representative of different and important Sicilian forest ecosystems. This analysis highlights the main weaknesses related to current forest management practices and the inadequate consultation with stakeholders.

Modelling intestinal absorption of salbutamol sulphate in rats

The objective was to develop a semiphysiological population pharmacokinetic model that describes the complex salbutamol sulphate absorption in rat small intestine. In situ techniques were used to characterize the salbutamol sulphate absorption at different concentrations (range: 0.15-18 mM). Salbutamol sulphate at concentration of 0.29 mM was administered in presence of verapamil (10 and 20 mM), grapefruit juice and sodium azide (NaN3) (0.3, 3 and 6 mM). Inflammation and infection are common pathogenic mechanisms involved in many otorhinolaryngological (ORL) chronic diseases. Broncalt® is a class II Medical Device containing: thermal water (Medesano, PR, Italy), hyaluronic acid, and grapefruit seed extract. It could exert a safe and effective anti-inflammatory, washing, and antimicrobial activity by virtue of these components. Therefore, the aim of the current survey, conducted in clinical practice of 84 Italian ORL centers, was to evaluate its safety and efficacy in the treatment of patients with chronic upper airways disease. A Short Presentation of LucSim

LucSim is a cellular automata (CA) dedicated to geographical analysis and spatial simulation for researchers and advanced planning institutes, providing user-friendly software in order to analyze and simulate land use changes and dynamics. Two complementary models are integrated in the CA: (1) a Markov Chain used to calculate transition matrices from a date to another, and (2) a Decision Tree able to automatically determine a set of transition rules to be applied on land use data. LucSim includes GIS compatibility functions allowing to display ESRI shapefiles and is based on raster georeferenced images saved in TIF format. It was mostly applied on French urban case studies.
