Intramuscular fatty acid composition of lambs given a tanniniferous diet with or without polyethylene glycol supplementation.

2007

The aim of this trial was to investigate the effects that dietary tannins have on lamb intramuscular fatty acids. Twenty-seven lambs were divided into three homogeneous groups: control group, receiving commercial concentrate based on maize; tannin group, fed a diet based on carob pulp (45% as fed basis); PEG group, receiving the same diet as the latter with addition of 42g/kg of polyethylene glycol (PEG, a binding agent that eliminates the effects of condensed tannins). The duration of the trial was 45 d. Intramuscular fatty acids were measured in the longissimus dorsi muscle. The isomer cis-9 trans-11 of linoleic acid (conjugated linoleic acid or CLA) and linolenic acid were higher in the …

Relationship between conformation and physicochemical properties of polypeptides. I. Synthesis of homo- and co-oligopeptides by the liquid-phase meth…

1980

The synthesis of the following oligo- and co-oligopeptides by the liquid-phase method is described: (L-Met)15 (I), [L-Glu(OBzl)]20 (II), (L-Val)8-Gly (IV), (L-Ile)8-Gly (V), (L-Ile)4-Gly-(L-Ile)4 (VI), (L-Ile)4-Pro-(L-Ile)4 (VII), (L-Met)5-L-Pro-(L-Met)5 (VIII), [L-Glu(OBzl)]7-L-Pro-[L-Glu(OBzl)]7 (IX). The oligomers are covalently bound to bifunctional polyethylene glycol (PEG) and monofunctional PEG-M of Mr 5 × 103−2 × 104. Analytical controls were carried out after each step of synthesis in order to ensure quantitative coupling yields. All products could be obtained in high purity as indicated by amino acid analysis, thin-layer chromatography and chiroptical methods. The solubility of th…

Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin (KLH): Slow In Vitro Reassociation of KLH1 and KLH2 from Immucothel®

1998

Abstract Following our in vitro reassociation of keyhole limpet hemocyanin subunits in the presence of high concentrations (100 mM each) of calcium and magnesium chloride (Harris et al., 1997a, Micron 28, 31–41; 1997b, Micron 28, 43–56), we have now extended our investigations by using a buffer system containing a lower concentration of the two divalent cations (10 mM each). Reassociation of mixed KLH subunits present in the commercially available product Immucothel® was performed using a standardized buffer solution containing 50 mM Tris–HCl, 150 mM NaCl, 10 mM CaCl2 and 10 mM MgCl2 (pH 7.4) over a minimum period of one week, at 4°C. This solution was selected as being close to our KLH sta…

Amphiphilic derivatives of a polyaspartamide: their aggregation and solubilization ability

2006

Abstract The self-aggregation and solubilization capability of a series of amphiphilic copolymers obtained by derivatisation of polymeric chain of α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)- dl -aspartamide (PHEA) with polyethylene glycols (PEG, being different molecular weight 2000 or 5000 Da, PEG2000 and PEG5000, respectively) and/or hexadecylamine alkyl chain (C16), namely PHEA–PEG2000, PHEA–PEG5000, PHEA–C16, PHEA–PEG2000–C16 and PHEA–PEG5000–C16, have been evidenced by performing systematic tensiometric and spectrophotometric studies. All measurements have been performed at 25.0 °C over a wide copolymer concentration range. The tensiometric results have shown that, for all copolymers studied, the surf…

Interactions between proteins and poly(ethylene-glycol) investigated using molecular dynamics simulations

2017

Poly(ethylene-glycol) (PEG) is a polymer used to coat therapeutic preparations, like drugs or drug nanocarriers, and improve their efficacy. This effect is probably due to a reduction of the interactions of the coated species with the host organism. Nevertheless, experiments show that PEGylated materials do interact with the surrounding biological milieu, and in particular with blood proteins. Here, we use atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to characterize the interactions between the polymer and several blood proteins. In these simulations, the proteins are immersed in a mixture of PEG and water molecules. We observe how PEG distributes around the protein surface and measure PEG-prot…

Inulin vinyl sulfone derivative cross-linked with bis-amino PEG: new materials for biomedical applications

2009

In this work new hydrogels based on biocompatible polymers such as inulin (INU) and O,O'-bis(2-aminoethyl)polyethyleneglycol (PEGBa) have been prepared and charaterized. In particular, INU has been derivatized with divinyl sulfone (DV) thus obtaining the INUDV derivative, a copolymer bearing double bonds highly reactive towards the conjugate addition by nucleophilic molecules. INUDV has been characterized by FT-IR, 1 H-NMR and SEC analyses that have confirmed the success of the derivatization reaction. With the aim to obtain novel hydrogel systems, INUDV derivative has been cross-linked with PEGBa in phosphate buffer solution pH 7.4. The reaction has been carried out for 4 h at room tempera…

Conformation of Polyethylene Glycol inside Confined Space: Simulation and Experimental Approaches

2021

The modification of the inner nanopore wall by polymers is currently used to change the specific properties of the nanosystem. Among them, the polyethylene glycol (PEG) is the most used to prevent the fouling and ensure the wettability. However, its properties depend mainly on the chain structure that is very difficult to estimate inside this confined space. Combining experimental and simulation approaches, we provide an insight to the consequence of the PEG presence inside the nanopore on the nanopore properties. We show, in particular, that the cation type in the electrolyte, together with the type of electrolyte (water or urea), is at the origin of the ion transport modification in the n…

Microbiological and ageing performance of polyhydroxyalkanoate-based multilayer structures of interest in food packaging

2014

Polyhydroxyalkanoates undergo crystallization during film processing and storage. In this paper, the physico–chemical ageing properties of multilayer structures based on a commercial polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and a polyhydroxybutyrate-co-valerate copolymer with 3% valerate content (PHBV3), containing a nanostructured zein interlayer, were analysed. The microbiological safety of the films was also evaluated by monitoring the growth of an inoculum of Listeria monocytogenes over time. Polyethyleneglycol (PEG) was added to PHBV3 films to facilitate handling as the PHBV3 mutlilayer systems (without plasticizer) cracked during film-formation. Crystallinity, thermal, mechanical, barrier and optica…

Impact of Amino-Functionalization on the Response of Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) to External Stimuli

2022

It is shown that amino-functionalization of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) with the comonomer N,N-diethyl glycidyl amine (DEGA) triggers the emergence of extraordinary stimuli responsiveness and phase behavior of PEG. In dependence of the solution pH, tapered PEG-co-PDEGA exhibits a highly cooperative two-step inverse phase transition with respect to temperature. The polymer forms dispersed metastable nanoglobules in the medically relevant temperature range around human body temperature. Independently, cloud points can be adjusted between 40 and 90 °C via the pH of the solution. Changing the polymer architecture to a block structure, in pronounced contrast, the polymer exhibits a gradual growt…

Solution Properties of Polysarcosine: From Absolute and Relative Molar Mass Determinations to Complement Activation

2018

Polysarcosine (pSar) was one of the first polymers synthesized in a controlled living manner, but it was only recently when it was reconsidered as a promising alternative for poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in biomedical applications. Despite receiving more and more attention, very little is known about the solution properties of pSar, such as coil dimensions and thermodynamic interactions. In this article, we report on these properties of pSar with degrees of polymerization 50 < X-n < 400 that were prepared by controlled living ring-opening polymerization. The polymers are characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, dynamic and static light scattering (SL…
