Education for all : the hazard within fragile states

Currently, over a third of children not in school live in countries considered being as fragile. These countries, which are mainly located in sub-Saharan Africa, will not reach the objectives of Education For All for 2015. This thesis covers approaches across comparative education, political science and sociology of organizations. It explores empirically the condi¬tions of achievement of EFA within the contexts of fragility. A chaque classe ses élèves : procédures et critères d'affectation à l'école élémentaire

This paper examines the class formation procedures used in French elementary schools, specially when combination classes (with two grade levels) occur. Principals were interviewed about pupils' assignment criteria and at the same time, the class distributional properties of 70 classes were analysed. The results confirm that pupils are sorted into classrooms based on a combination of individual criteria, including gender and academic achievement, in an effort to keep to the initial mix of children. Degenerative cervical myelopathy is the most common cause of spinal cord injury in the elderly population in the developed world, and it significantly affects the quality of life of patients and their caregivers. Surgery remains the only treatment option able to halt disease progression and provide neurological recovery for most patients.
