Experienced health in older women with rheumatoid arthritis.
2007
ABSTRACT This study explored how older women with chronic illness and disability experience their own health. Data were collected in in-depth interviews with ten older women with rheumatoid arthritis. Data analysis and interpretation was carried out within a phenomenological-hermeneutic frame of understanding, which revealed five major themes: health as coping with everyday life, health as freedom, health as absence of inconvenience, health as togetherness and health as mental well-being. For older people with chronic illness and disability, good health found expression in general well-being. It was perceived as a state of equilibrium that the respondents sought to maintain through their ow…
Steroidal glycosides from the Vietnamese cultivar Cordyline fruticosa “Fairchild red”
2021
Abstract A phytochemical study of Cordyline fruticosa “Fairchild red” (Asparagaceae) from Vietnam, led to the isolation of fourteen steroidal glycosides, including twelve previously undescribed along with two known ones. Ten compounds were obtained by successive solid/liquid chromatographic methods from an aqueous-ethanolic extract of the roots, and four from the aerial parts. Their structures were elucidated mainly by spectroscopic analysis 2D NMR and mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), as spirostanol glycosides, 5α-spirost-25(27)-ene-1β,3β,4α-triol 1-O-β-D-fucopyranoside, 5α-spirost-(25)27-ene-1β,3β,4α-triol 1-O-β-D-xylopyranoside, 5α-spirost-(25)27-ene-1β,3β,4α-triol 1-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1 →…
Testosterone and cortisol release among Spanish soccer fans watching the 2010 World Cup Final
2012
This field study investigated the release of testosterone and cortisol of a vicarious winning experience in Spanish fans watching the finals between Spain and the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer. Spanish fans (n = 50) watched the match with friends or family in a public place or at home and also participated in a control condition. Consistent with hypotheses, results revealed that testosterone and cortisol levels were higher when watching the match than on a control day. However, neither testosterone nor cortisol levels increased after the victory of the Spanish team. Moreover, the increase in testosterone secretion was not related to participants' sex, age or soccer fandom, b…
Perceiving need for lifestyle counseling: findings from Finnish individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes.
2011
OBJECTIVE To investigate the proportion of individuals at high risk of type 2 diabetes who perceive the need for lifestyle counseling, factors associated with this perception, and whether the perceived need is associated with subsequent attendance in lifestyle intervention. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Baseline and intervention data were obtained from 10,149 participants in a Finnish National Diabetes Prevention Project. RESULTS In total, 36% of men and 52% of women perceived the need for counseling. Most of the risk factors did not increase the perceived need for counseling. Counselling for physical activity, life-space mobility and falls prevention in old age (COSMOS): protocol of a randomised controlled trial.
2019
IntroductionThe most promising way to promote active life years in old age is to promote regular participation in physical activity (PA). Maintaining lower extremity muscle function with good balance has been associated with fewer falls and the need of help from others. This article describes the design and intervention of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) investigating the effectiveness of a health and PA counselling programme on life-space mobility and falls rates in community-dwelling older adults at the Health Kiosk and/or Service Centre. Methods and analysisCommunity-dwelling men and women (n=450) aged 65 years and over with early phase mobility limitation will be recruited to a 24-mo…
