Ancient human genomes suggest three ancestral populations for present-day Europeans

2014

We sequenced the genomes of a ∼7,000-year-old farmer from Germany and eight ∼8,000-year-old hunter-gatherers from Luxembourg and Sweden. We analysed these and other ancient genomes1,2,3,4 with 2,345 contemporary humans to show that most present-day Europeans derive from at least three highly differentiated populations: west European hunter-gatherers, who contributed ancestry to all Europeans but not to Near Easterners; ancient north Eurasians related to Upper Palaeolithic Siberians3, who contributed to both Europeans and Near Easterners; and early European farmers, who were mainly of Near Eastern origin but also harboured west European hunter-gatherer related ancestry. We model these popula…

Salute dei re, salute del popolo. Mangiare e curarsi nella Sicilia tardomedievale

2013

Dining and personal health care are two dimensions which are strongly connected to the body, between need and pleasure. They are two dimensions which have many social, local, religious and economic implications involving knowledge and different therapies related to age and gender. The social role is equally important. With a focus on the court (noble, episcopal, real) and the cities, the present work focuses on the methods and the uses of healing practices of both kings and islanders.[it] Mangiare e curarsi sono due dimensioni fortemente connesse al corpo, tra bisogno e piacere. Due dimensioni dense di sfumature sociali e locali, religiose ed economiche, che implicano conoscenze e terapie d…

The Contribution of the Inter-American Human Rights Bodies to Evolving International Law on Indigenous Rights over Lands and Natural Resources

2010

AbstractBecause of the special relationship with land that characterises indigenous groups, rights over land and natural resources are at the heart of indigenous claims under international law. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and the Inter-American Court have developed a copious jurisprudence on the subject matter and contributed to the establishment of certain minimum indigenous peoples' land rights under customary international law. This article analyses the Inter-American judicial discourse on land issues in the light of the current status of relevant international law and reflects upon the potential contribution of the former to the further development of the latter. It fo…

From the Morlack to the Slav: Images of South Slavic People between Exoticism and Illyrism in Italian Literature and Opera during the 19th Century

2012

Alberto Fortis’ “Viaggio in Dalmazia” (Padua, 1774) described for the first time the Morlacks (Cr. “Vlasi”) of the inner Dalmatia as the true model of a primitive group, whose characteristics became a source of inspiration until 1830s for some Italian writers and ballet composers devoted to exoticism. Contemporaneously, Homer’s paradigm, introduced by Melchiorre Cesarotti in the foreword to the Italian version of the poems of Ossian (1763), as quoted by Fortis, was in turn transformed by the composer and doctor of Split Giulio Bajamonti. Even though published in Italian, Bajamonti’s “Morlacchismo d’Omero” (Venice, 1797) must be considered as the first contribution to the romantic Croatian l…

The human-computer connection: An overview of brain-computer interfaces

2018

This article introduces the field of brain-computer interfaces (BCI), which allows the control of devices without the generation of any active motor output but directly from the decoding of the user’s brain signals. Here we review the current state of the art in the BCI field, discussing the main components of such an interface and illustrating ongoing research questions and prototypes for controlling a large variety of devices, from virtual keyboards for communication to robotics systems to replace lost motor functions and even clinical interventions for motor rehabilitation after a stroke. The article concludes with some insights into the future of BCI.
