Recent studies suggest that aspartic proteinase Cathepsin D may be implicated in the process of tumor invasion and metastasis. In fact several in vitro observations showed that this proteinase may facilitate the spread of neoplastic cells through different mechanisms related to its proteolytic activity by acting at different levels of the metastatic cascade. Cathepsin D may promote tumor cell proliferation by acting as an autocrine mitogen through the activation of latent forms of growth factors or by interacting with growth factor receptors. The construction of metazoan calcium carbonate skeletons is finely regulated by a proteinaceous extracellular matrix, which remains embedded within the exoskeleton. In spite of numerous biochemical studies, the precise localization of skeletal proteins has remained for a long time as an elusive goal. In this paper, we describe a technique for visualizing shell matrix proteins on the surface of calcium carbonate crystals or within the biominerals. Abstract Despite Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is highly prevalent in older populations, low rates of HP diagnosis and eradication are reported in older persons, even in geriatric wards. We aim to evaluate the results of a HP-eradicating program in a sample of older patients in relation to dyspeptic symptoms and to endoscopic findings. Comparison of isotope ratio mass spectrometry and nondispersive isotope-selective infrared spectroscopy for 13C-urea breath test.

The 13C-urea breath test (UBT) is a sensitive and noninvasive method to diagnose Helicobacter pylori infection, but mass spectrometry (IRMS) is very expensive. The aims of this study were to compare the new low-priced infrared spectroscopy with IRMS in detecting the infection and to assess the influence of feeding on test accuracy.One hundred thirty-four patients with dyspeptic symptoms were recruited. Of these, 74 were infected and 60 uninfected on the basis of both CLO-test and histology. The effects of E-64 (Cathepsin B and L inhibitor) and Pepstatin A (Cathepsin D inhibitor) on spontaneous and experimental metastasis formation were investigated in mice with MCa mammary carcinoma, M5076 ovarian sarcoma and L1210 leukemia. Pepstatin induced a marked decrease in the number of spontaneous metastasis in MCa or M5076 tumor bearing mice. This phenomenon was also noted with E-64 but only in M5076 tumor bearing mice.
