Aging and microRNA messaging : associations with systemic estrogen levels and physical performance
2018
This thesis took an innovative approach, which involved methodological development, to investigate microRNAs as candidate molecules and as genome-wide regulators of age, menopausal status and physical condition in both sexes. The focus was on potential serum microRNAs indicative of age, pre- or postmenopausal status, with or without estrogen- based hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and long-term physical training. MicroRNA associations with adiposity and inflammatory markers were also analyzed. Three different study designs were used: 1) the SAWEs study comprised healthy postmenopausal monozygotic twin sisters (n=11, 54-62 years) with discordance for HRT and premenopausal women (n=30, 20-4…
The Investment Performance of U.S. Islamic Mutual Funds
2020
Islamic investment funds have become increasingly important because of high demand from many investors, including those outside the Muslim investment community. This article compares the performance and risk sensitivity of Islamic mutual funds in the United States with that of their conventional peers. This article also analyzes the performance of Islamic funds, and compares this performance with that of socially responsible investment (SRI) mutual funds. Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM)-based methodology was used for the analysis. The results suggest that over the entire study period (1987&ndash
Evaluating the impact of public subsidies on a firm's performance : a two-stage quasi-experimental approach
2009
In this paper we evaluate the effectiveness of regional R&D public programs in Catalonia (Spain) with a two-stage procedure. Firstly, we compare the performance of publicly subsidised companies (treated) with that of similar, but unsubsidised companies (non-treated). We use the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) methodology to construct a control group which, with regard to its observable characteristics, is as similar as possible to the treated group, and that allows us to identify firms which maintain the same propensity to receive public subsidies. Secondly, and once a valid comparison group has been established, we compare the respective performance of each firm using regression techniques…
How to predict university performance: a case study of a prestigious Turkish university
2016
International audience; Turkey's education system is based on a centralized selection system, starting from secondary education level. For post-secondary studies, students are sorted according to their scores in a competitive national exam. By statute, Galatasaray University, a French speaking institution founded in 1992 by Turkey and France, enrolls half of its students from the very best candidates while the other half comes from French speaking high schools (relatively top-ranked). These students must be classified amongst the first 25,000 in the national competition to be admitted as well as passing a competitive exam in French, although their national ranking remains lower than the fir…
Structural analysis, phase stability and electrochemical characterization of Nb doped BaCe0.9Y0.1O3−x electrolyte for IT-SOFCs
2012
Abstract To improve the chemical stability of high temperature proton conductors based on barium cerate, electrolyte powders doped with different amounts of niobium were synthesized by the citrate–nitrate auto-combustion method. Pure single phases of BaCe 0.9− x Nb x Y 0.1 O 3− x (BCYN, 0.03 ≤ x ≤ 0.12) were obtained by thermal treatment at 1000 °C. Sintering at 1450 °C for 10 h produced dense pellets. X-ray absorption spectroscopy allowed to define the dopant ion insertion site and the co-dopant valency. Treatments in pure CO 2 atmosphere at 700 °C for 3 h and subsequent XRD analysis were carried out to probe the chemical stability of the produced electrolytes. The influence of the prese…
Effects of sport-specific training background on performance of volleyball and basketball athletes
2013
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the influence of 3 years of sport-specific training background (SSTB) on throwing performance and vertical jumping in young female players of team sports. Methods: Thirty-one healthy adolescent girls, of which 11 age-matched control subjects [C], 10 volleyballers (VP) and 10 basketballers (BP) were considered in our analysis. The vertical jumping performance was evaluated by squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump with (CMJ-AS) and without arm swing (CMJ) using Optojump system (Microgate S.R.L., Italy). Instead, the throwing performance was measured by seated backward overhead ball throw (SBOMBT) and seated chest pass throw (SCPT) using a 3-kg rubber m…
