Business model innovation for the SDGs: Towards a performance measurement system
2019
Business model innovation can be a key element for realizing the transformation needed to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals. However, literature on Sustainable Business Models still lacks quantitative-oriented approaches and tools supporting the implementation and assessment of business model innovations for sustainability. This study proposes an eight-phase performance measurement system supporting organisations in implementing, assessing and managing business model innovations aiming at contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals. The performance measurement system builds upon literature on business model innovation for sustainability, performance measurement and manageme…

To successfully learn using open Internet resources, students must be able to critically search, evaluate and select online information, and verify sources. Defined as critical online reasoning (COR), this construct is operationalized on two levels in our study: (1) the student level using the newly developed Critical Online Reasoning Assessment (CORA), and (2) the online information processing level using event log data, including gaze durations and fixations. The written responses of 32 students for one CORA task were scored by three independent raters. The resulting score was operationalized as “task performance,” whereas the gaze fixations and durations were defined as indicators of “pr…
Outlining the impact of intellectual capital accumulation and depletion processes on the performance of an insurance firm: a dynamic resource-based p…
2014
This paper aims to develop a conceptual framework on how Intellectual Capital (IC) accumulation and depletion processes are dynamically interrelated with firm performance. Such a framework makes explicit the relationships between policy levers, strategic resources, drivers, end-results and performance indicators through a Dynamic Resource-based perspective. Such an approach matches the Resource based perspective and the System Dynamics (SD) methodology. This paper argues that in order to explain a firm superior performance, it is not sufficient to look at the endowment of strategic resources in a given moment of time; it is instead required to investigate the dynamics of company strategic r…
Novel voltage-controlled conditioning circuit applied to the ISFETs temporary drift and thermal dependency
2003
This paper describes a novel conditioning circuit applied to ion-sensitive field-effect transistors/membrane-ion-sensitive field-effect transistors (ISFETs/MEMFETs) sensors. The novel conditioning circuit allows the sensor polarization with the needed either voltage or current required in each application, thanks to two completely independent voltage-controlled blocks (current and voltage blocks). The control of the voltage block is the most critical point in our design because the voltage block maintains the sensor feedback stable, avoiding the thermal and temporary drifts of the sensor feedback.
Performance analysis of binary DPSK modulation schemes over Hoyt fading channels
2009
This paper presents a performance analysis of differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation schemes over Hoyt fading channels. Based upon the theory of DPSK modulation and a recently derived formula for the probability density function (PDF) of the differential phase between two Hoyt vectors contaminated by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), the bit error probability (BEP) for DPSK systems with noncoherent demodulation over Hoyt channels is analyzed. In the analysis, the correlation between adjacent bits is taken into account. The obtained theoretical results are fully validated first by reducing them to the corresponding known solutions for the Rayleigh fading distribution being a s…
Modelling of Water Supply Costs
2017
Water supply tariffs setting is a labour intensive regulatory procedure; currently number of informative and procedural shortages and problems exist. The aim of the current research is improvement of methodology for determination of the substantiated costs for provision of water services. A working hypothesis was advanced to modernize the methodology: the specific costs (/m3) required for the provision of water services in a specific region is a variable multi-parameter function of key performance indicators. There is preferred a benchmark modelling procedure, which is based on the factual cases (declared indicators of water utilities) and synthesis of the general regularity. The model is d…
DTMC modeling for performance evaluation of DW-MAC in wireless sensor networks
2016
Synchronized duty cycling (DC) aligns sensor nodes to wake up at the same time in order to reduce idle listening for medium access control (MAC) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Demand wakeup MAC (DW-MAC) is a popular synchronous DC MAC protocol which allows nodes to compete and transmit multiple packets in one operational cycle. This multiple packet transmission (MPT) feature makes DW-MAC more energy efficient when comparing with other existing single time competition based protocols such as sensor MAC (S-MAC). In the literature, no analytical model exists to evaluate the performance of DW-MAC. In this paper, we develop two associated discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) models and incorpo…
Channel Occupancy-Based Dynamic Spectrum Leasing in Multichannel CRNs: Strategies and Performance Evaluation
2016
Spectrum leasing has been proposed as an effective approach for enabling more flexible spectrum utilization in CRNs. In CRNs, a primary network (PN) which consists of multiple primary users (PUs) can lease part of the licensed spectrum to secondary users (SUs) in exchange for operational benefits. The focus of this study is to investigate how and to what extent the PN allows spectrum leasing in CRNs, considering the QoS requirements of the PN and the secondary network (SN). Correspondingly, we propose two dynamic spectrum leasing strategies, which can improve the QoS performance of SUs while ensuring sufficient remuneration for PUs. In order to dynamically adjust the portion of leased bandw…
Energy consumption and optimal relay node placement for cooperative retransmissions
2010
Previous work on cooperative MAC design has shown significant performance improvement in terms of throughput and packet delivery ratio. However, little attention has been paid to extra energy cost at the relay node in order to achieve such benefit. In this paper, we focus on analyzing energy consumption at a relay node in cooperative retransmission networks with mixed Rayleigh and Rician fading channels. Furthermore, optimal relay location is studied with respect to energy efficiency in different scenarios. The simulation and calculation results coincide with each other, both showing the optimal location of the relay node is scenario-dependent and can be obtained under given channel conditi…
