Designing empirical experiments to compare interactive multiobjective optimization methods
2022
Interactive multiobjective optimization methods operate iteratively so that a decision maker directs the solution process by providing preference information, and only solutions of interest are generated. These methods limit the amount of information considered in each iteration and support the decision maker in learning about the trade-offs. Many interactive methods have been developed, and they differ in technical aspects and the type of preference information used. Finding the most appropriate method for a problem to be solved is challenging, and supporting the selection is crucial. Published research lacks information on the conducted experiments’ specifics (e.g. questions asked), makin…
Effects of 5-Week of FIFA 11+ Warm-Up Program on Explosive Strength, Speed, and Perception of Physical Exertion in Elite Female Futsal Athletes
2022
Futsal is a sport that originates from soccer and is increasingly practiced all over the world. Since training and warm-up protocols should be sport-specific in order to reduce injuries and maximize performance, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of 5 weeks of the FIFA 11+ warm-up program on explosive strength, speed, and perception of physical exertion in elite female futsal athletes. Twenty-nine elite female futsal athletes participating in the Italian national championships were divided into two groups: the experimental group (EG) underwent 5 weeks of the FIFA 11+ warm-up program, and the control group (CG) underwent 5 weeks of a dynamic warm-up. We evaluated any effect on explosiv…
The role of school physical education on adolescents' fitness levels during the pandemic period from COVID-19: An observational study of the Italian …
2022
ObjectivesIn Italy, in 2013, a new school curriculum with a sport character was established in high schools, called Sports High School (SHS). The aims of this study were: (1) to assess the fitness levels of SHS students who, respecting all the safety rules to limit the spread of COVID-19, practiced physical education (PE) at school with continuity for almost all of 2021, and to compare them with Traditional High School (THS) students; (2) to evaluate as the SHS may have influenced the fitness levels in adolescents.MethodsThis is a case-control study in which thirty participants were enrolled (SHS: n = 15; THS: n = 15). To assess the fitness levels, the following tests were administered: the…
Study of vocalists' use of emotions in performance preparation
2015
Musicians and educators understand the importance of expressivity in vocal performance. Despite the acceptance of expressivity as a crucial element in musical performance, educators have reported addressing it only cursorily or not addressing it at all when preparing for a performance. For these reasons, this research has focused on techniques used by trained musicians when preparing a performance, to be adapted and applied for use by teachers with their large vocal ensembles. Participants in this study were enrolled in vocal / operatic performance programs at universities in the United States, Ireland, Finland, and Hong Kong. Their progress was tracked throughout the semester by three ques…
Preparing an emotionally expressive vocal performance
2018
This paper explores the processes, strategies, and methods used when preparing an expressive vocal performance from the point-of-view of the artist. The study tracked the development and performance preparation of 13 university students studying classical voice performance or music education. Participants were asked to choose one unfamiliar piece from their repertoire and complete three surveys administered at the beginning, middle, and end of their study term. Each survey was geared toward the participants’ level of preparation and pertained to their approaches for learning new repertoire, the application of constructive criticism from peers and instructors, and experiences during and afte…
Communicating voice emphasis in harpsichord performance
2009
We investigated the means used by harpsichordists to communicate voice-specific melodic emphasis. Twelve harpsichordists were asked to perform a short Baroque polyphonic piece by Frescobaldi (1583-1643) on a harpsichord equipped with a MIDI console. Three conditions were tested, each requiring performers to emphasize a particular voice in the piece (soprano, alto, tenor). Four parameters were analyzed: velocity, note onset asynchrony, timing deviations, and articulation. Mean onset asynchronies were much larger than those observed in organ or piano performance, averaging more than 100 ms between outer voices. However, asynchronies did not vary significantly between conditions, suggesting th…
Iconografia votiva e performances rituali: qualche esempio dalla Sicilia greca
2020
The paper aims at underlining the relationships between the iconography of terracotta figurines and the ritual practices. As case study the pinakes depicting a group of standing/playing and dancing maidens are treated, and the whole "votive system" to which they belong is analyzed.
Essays on wages, promotions and performance evaluations
2017
This dissertation comprises four empirical research articles that use personnel data from a large university and worker-level panel data from Finland to examine the determinants of wages, promotions and employee performance evaluations. The first article employs personnel data to examine the importance of worker output and job seniority as predictors of employee performance evaluations and promotions. The results suggest that better-performing employees – with output measured both in absolute terms and relative to peers – were more likely to be assigned higher performance grades and had a higher probability of being promoted to more complex jobs than their peers with similar characteristics…
